SHOCKING sensation

before you guys start calling me a retard...

is it normal for a distributor cap to shock you when there is NO bare wires showing, everything is hooked up right, and firing order correct?????

cause mine shocked the bejusus outta me just a minute ago...twice

i dont understand why it shocked me though...i thought it had to be a bare wire or terminal.

could it be a bad ground somewhere???

help please...i cant take much more shock therapy.

Bad insulation on the wires or a cracked cap or a carbon track will cause this.

Uhhh... If you h ave the coil wire hooked up in the middle and no other wires on the cap... and crankign the car, those open teminals will give ya a shock you'll never forget.

i have brand new FRPP 9mm wires and a brand new MSD cap and rotor...and like I said everything is right...but god **** it hurt :damnit:

it is easier for it to happen if you have your other hand (for instance) touching metal (like the radiator support, plenum, etc) as this allows an easier path to ground than through your shoes.

I get it all the time (i get static electricity shocks all the time too. dry air in the desert).

i can stand beside the car not touching anything....and put one finger on any boot on the cap and ZAAPPP! presto, fried finger... WTF?!

Reminds me of a time last year when my buddy and I were doing some ops checks in the cockpit of an F-16. My buddy, apparently out of curiosity, pulled a little triangular shaped handle on the left side of the console, which was followed by an abrupt "woosh" sound, and then the sound of liquid spilling. Turned out the F-16 was spilling hydraulic fluid EVERYWHERE.. coming from right between the 2 rear landing gear.

My buddy and I promperly cleaned up the mess, then a few minutes later, he said "I'm not sure what happened there.. I want to see if pulling the handle is for sure what caused that." .. and pulled it again, again spilling a ****load more hydraulic fluid everywhere.

Turns out it was the manual release lever for the landing gear. The old "wasn't sure what happened" .. gotta love it.

Ya did that on my 70 (full msd setup) with a tad wet hand... duh... grabbed the strut brace for some support and was adjusting the timing with the other hand... It didn't hurt but I couldn't let go for a second and my arm was a tad numb for a while afterwards.... remember its the amps not necessairly the volts that will kill ya.

Thats how I check for spark on a no start. Isnt that what everyone does.

I did that once about 15 years ago. Better story would be a bout 20 years ago I pulled the plugwire off of a running dirtbike.
