Okay guys here goes for my first post. I was hoping it would be for advice for upgrades. Yesterday something turned loose in my bottom end so now I will be shopping for a new/rebuilt short block. I have been seeing a lot about the expedition motors. Is this a route I should go? What do I need to look for while choosing my short block. My car now has afr 185 aluminum heads a e cam (from what I was told) trick flow intake with 70mm throttle body. I am hoping to bolt everything I can back up. What ever isnt damaged anyway. And also I would like for the bottom end to take a spray if I ever choose to go that way. Thanks for any help

There are several in a junk yard near me. Also does any one know anything about the 302 in a mercury? I have the option to buy one out of I think a mountaineer. If I go that route is it best to tear it down and go through it. Thanks guys I am just not wanting to do this twice

Are you on a super tight budget? If so, the Explorer or Mountainers (should be no difference between the two) are budget friendly swaps. In my opinion, if you were already use to an AFR headed motor, you will probably not be happy with the power loss. I would pull your current motor apart and see what is salvagable. If the heads and intake are good, I would start with looking at a stroker short block. You can get one for around $2000. Cam, gaskets, fluids and all the misc stuff will probably run you a $1000 more (thats over projecting costs), but a stroker with AFR 185 heads would be a powerful little motor.

I am not on a super tight budget but I guess you could say I am trying to cut cost due to I havent had the car but about 2 months and the wife is talking smack. I am praying that I will still be able to use my heads and upper intake. I also have to keep in consideration mechanic cost. Where are you seeing the stroker short block for that cost?

Explorer/Mountaineer engines are the same. I've got a '99 Mountaineer motor in my Bronco and it has GT40P heads just like the Explorer does

Question - I know you don't know if you have terminal damage to the block you have now - but if it's salvagable and you're on a budget - why not just rebuild the original block? you could have it machined and fix the damage.

I am afraid that I may have to much internal damage cause of the broken crank. At least that is what it looks like happened. That is definitely an option and something I would do if I can. I will tear it down before I actually purchase another bottom end. So many different options I guess

Used Explorer/Mountaineer block is a much cheaper option than machining yours. Just the rebuild kit alone would put you close to the same price as getting a used engine and then you also have to factor in machine costs

If I go the explorer motor route I dont think I will be happy in the long run knowing I didnt go ahead and spend the extra dollar. But it wojld be the fastest route back on the road. I gotta just kick it around a little and see what my best option turns out to be.

If I was in a tight spot, one of the big Mustang resto places offers a budget short block. It is less than $1000 type for a stock rebuild. (LRS $699). New/redone parts would make me happier than a take out motor. They might have driven worse than you and not changed the oil!

Also, Summit was featured in one of my car mags with a diy stroker kit and their prepped block. Did anyone else read that?

My next step is to get the motor out of the car and see what kind of damage i am looking at. The mustang resto is a option i havent thought about. I think I will probably due that before the used option. Do you recommend anybody?

How are u sure the crank is bad and not something else
I am not totally sure. Just by looking at how the crank tried to walk out of the timing chain cover i feel like the crank broke. Im not really sure of ryhme or reason until i get it out. Looks like next weekend may be my first chance. Work is taken presence this weekend but I also need the extra cash to help pay for what ever may come.

If the crank walked or snapped the snout in most cases the cam, lifters and everything else internally are trash. I would expect some head damage as well, but that can all be fixed after a careful inspection...
