Could be just the tri-ax lever, I did mine like that before I did the complete swap.
Maybe previous owner installed the tri-ax handle only?
Any of the real aftermarket shifters (Pro5, Steeda, B&M, Hurst etc.) when adjusted properly should provide a very precise and solid feel.
I like Hurst.
MGW gets great reviews, but "I" don't trust all the adjustable points in the handle when it comes to racing.
Further more, I like a longer handle for racing as well. The little stubby ones work, but are too far out of my reach/comfort zone.
I offer those points for your consideration, not to start an "they work for me" debate.

My previous car had a Pro 5.0 and I really liked it. Now with my present car I went with American Muscle "brand" shorty and...bleh. Like CleanLX I really need a longer shifter for 3rd gear when racing. This generic shifter had to be adjusted twice. Once when installed and once after racing/driving for the summer. OP problem very well could be the stops. If they check out I'd be worried it's trans related. Why I cheaped out on this shifter beats me...I will buy either an MGW or pro5.0 when I go TKO.
I also feel the longer Hurst would provide a great feel for a daily driver. Less effort along with the improved lower shifter design over stock. The trade off is the speed of the shift with the longer throw. That being said I hate the look.
I think the added leverage ratio more than makes up for the longer throw length with regard to speed between gears... yes, that's it, I am convinced.
