I received my ford racing flywheel from american muscle along with a few other goodies. everything looked good, except for this scratch on the clutch side of the flywheel. should I be concerned with this? I bought brand new stuff so I wouldn't have to worry about getting something damaged... I don't want to have to resurface a brand new flywheel. should I ask for a replacement? or is this nothing to worry about?

Its nothing to worry about, is upsetting though to open the box on a shiny new part and see a scratch

ah so it's ok then... even if the scratch is deep enough to catch my fingernail?

at what point would a scratch on a new flywheel cause any problems?

It's only an inch or two. What's the big deal?

A scratch won't give you problems at all. Slotted brake rotors don't cause problems.... What will is a warped/uneven surface, or a glazed surface keeping the clutch from biting properly.

Maybe someone more knowledgeable can expand on this, but I believe it is acceptable to run Scotch Brite over the flywheel surface. I'd be tempted to do that in this case to make sure the scratch doesn't have a sharp edge or a burr.

Yes, you're actually correct. I'm not more knowledgeable, I've just seen it first hand (Nylon Scrubber).

Running a high speed scotch brite pad over the surface is often done to remove the "glaze" on a used flywheel that develops over time. Usually from clutch slippage and heat.

A brand new flywheel shouldn't have that issue. If it were me, I would just hose it down with a little brake cleaner and maybe just scrub it down with a pad or some 320 sand paper by hand, just to dull the surface a little and as stated remove any sharp edges? I would resist the urge to try to polish that scratch out. You'll just end up with a low spot and a ruined flywheel.

These are the ones you can get at Walmart, Target or your Grocery Store. Where do you live? You want me to mail you one? I have two sitting at my desk. That's where the picture came from.

You could even do the red scotch pads that you use to prep metal for paint. Don't have to be real agressive, just make sure there isn't anything there to eat up the clutch.
