Should I pay a machine shop $160 to hone my cylinders?

You guys saw my other post about me honing my cylinders and some of you scared me away. I called up a local machine shop and they want $160 to hone my cylinders. Think this is worth it or should I continue with my drill/hone? Im rebuilding a stock motor with stock pistons/crank/rods with new rings/bearings. Think its worth it?

from what i've read, it doesn't sound too hard, but i've never actually done it. if it were me, i'd probably pay to have it done and watch how they did it so i could do it myself the next time. either that or if you know someone who has done it, maybe they can tell you the tricks and what to watch out for.

yes, pay someone who knows all the tricks. $160 seems a little cheap to me. While it is at the shop, have them hot-tank it, and replace your freeze plugs with thread in ones. It will be a little more, but worth it.

Only a wuss would pay a machine shop to hone the cylinders. And the TFS Stage 1 Cam is the sorriest cam ever made because you will produce absolutely NO MORE POWER with it!


J/K .... but if you don't feel comfortable with what you guy's have done to the walls so far, I'd take it to the machine shop. Better than taking the chance of having to rip it all back apart again. Since it's already at a shop, I'd ask them to take a look at it & get their input on it .....

It's probably smarter that you send it to the professionals, especially since you are trying to retain the stock bore size. A bad hone could force you into getting the block bored and re-honed.

Find out how much they are going over, cause if they go .30 wich is typical...you will need new pistons.

Yup. A bad hone job and you'll be burning more oil than 347's

You made the right move. Is that price honed with a torque plate? Have them check the decks too and definatly tank it to clean it. Also, shouldn't you have the cyl walls checked to be sure a hone job is all they need to clean up?

I would have them bore it .030 over and then get different pistons.

I got my 351 .30 over, tq plates, tanked, line honed, cam bearings, ect for $375 including the price of the block from the guy.

i did it myself, wasnt hard at all....
you are talking about staying the same size and getting just the nice cross hatch in the cylinder wall, right? if so that is cake

Just picked it up, it was $120. Looks so pretty! I kinda wanted to do this for peace of mind cause you all scare me some times. That price is with the torque plate, what ever that is. I gave him one of the pistons I was using so he could figure out how much he could take off so it better not be .30 over. While I was over their I saw my freinds 03 cobra that he was putting new pistons in, those cars are so sweet! They come wiht an awesome crank/rods and make my stuff look like its been buried 4 feet underground for 32 years and dug up for this rebuild!

I have never head ove having to use a tq plate just to do a bore hone. I thought they only use them when you bore over the cyl.
