Should this be covered under warranty?

Hey everyone. I picked up my GT last Friday. Today I finally had enough time to thoroughly check her out. Everything looked pretty good until I found this small crack in the clearcoat on the bottom of the fender lip. The inside edge of the fender looks like the clearcoat was somewhat drippy. Feels rough when I slide my finger along the bottom edge so I took a closer look and discovered a small chip in the clearcoat. I attached a picture of it. I don't think a rock caused this. As you can see it looks like a drip and the drip part just cracked off. Does it look like this should be a warranty repair? Thanks in advance.

Congrats on your new car.

Ya know, fifty people on this board could say yes the dealer must fix that and all fifty could be wrong. The best thing to do is bring it over there and ask. Good Luck

Don't touch it. Whats the dealer gonna do? He will give your car to some 18 year old punk straight outta auto body school and tell him to repaint the part. The factory paint even with the imperfection is far better.

This is my two cents...

1) as soon as you get a car repainted, for whatever reason, it will show (especially the way some dealers do the work: you get fumes on other panels, spray on some of the suspension elements because they don't cover things right...) and you lose value.

2) Please don't take me wrong, but you could go over all new cars, all makes considered, and find similar defects. When I looked at the picture you submitted I said to myself that if I'd be a service manager, I would have a hard time to refrain myself from laughing out loud and not kick you out of my service area...

If the primer would show, or if this defect would be on a flat panel, such as the trunk, hood or top, then I would definity say "go for it", but for this...

I agree with Excon.

My Dad works in an autobody shop and has said silver is the hardest to match. His painter has been painting cars for about 30 years and hates silver. When my Dad's 86 Monte SS was hit, the trunk lid never matched the factory silver and ended up getting the whole car painted so it would match. This was with an experienced painter. I could imagine what a dealer's painter would do.

As a side note, the painter explained to me one day that the reason it doesn't match is something to do with the pigments. Unless you get it all from the same batch, there will be slight variations. In my Dad's case, the huge trunk panel was very obvious!

I say leave it and if you must do something, buy a bottle of touch up paint and do it yourself since; it is a small, non-noticeable spot. That way you have piece of mind and some for future use.

I had the same thing on mt fender lip and I told them to fix it. Well that was a big mistake. Not only did they have to do it twice because the first time it looked like ****, but they also put gouges in my seats, lost a plastic panel piece, had rubber shavings all over my interior from removing the windows, and the whole interior was covered in layer on dust! If I was you DONT DO IT! Just leave it alone!

I had a deep door ding on my 03 while it was on the lot .. they sent it out to get "fixed" ... came back painted, but not clear coated ... had to take it back again .... and you can still see where they did the "fix" ....

If it doesn't show: apply a little clear fingernail polish to it, or ask your local body shop if they can touch it up with clearcoat for ya. Just to seal the basecoat from moisture as the colorcoat doesn't have the durability. It's possible it was a repair from shipping damage, my shop has had a few come in although they were all minor bumper scratches.

I don't know about clear coats. I had a chip in the paint on my trunk lid. It was to the point where there appeared to be rust. I brought it back to the dealer and had them touch it up. My reasoning is if they screw it up or the paint eventually gets worse, they will not only have it on record, but will have to fix it. It just gives you more leverage. As far as the clear coat, can't they just fix that area without repainting it?

If ya'll are referring to my clearcoat .... they did the paint job first, didn't clear coat (it was really obvious), I took it back and they did the clear coat. But, you can still see where the work was done after it is washed and in the sunlight.

Thanks everyone. I went ahead and filled the chip with some touchup clearcoat. I am mostly worried that the chip will spread more. I am going to take it in and show the dealer what is up so it goes on record.
