Shredding my belt

So my serp belt is shredding on the side by the front of the car. Before it started going it was one tooth off the pulleys towards the front. Now its shredded that tooth and its on the pulleys now, just shredded. I tried to adjust it once and it just did the same thing. Anybody have any possible ideas as to what the problem is?

Never dealt with this on cars, but from my snowmachine experience, you've got a serious problem with pulley alignment.

Have you changed any of the accessories that have ribbed pulleys? Are all of those still tight in their mounting positions? I'm even less help because I removed my A/C and smog, so I probably don't have the same pulley setup that you do, so I can't just go look at my car.

Start looking for variance in those pulleys. I'd say that's where your problem is.
 
Well I figured it out. It's the crank pulley. I pulled the belt back to where it should be and the crank pulley was the first to pull itself back to the wrong position. So if it is all lined up and the crank pulley is pulling the belt out wouldn't that mean the crank pulley is too far in? Is that possible?
 
Ok so now I'm not sure if it is too far out or two far in. Like I said when you start the car the crank pulley immediately pulls the belt out all the way to the front of the car making me think that it's too far in and needs a spacer or something. However, when it pulls itself out on the crank and its still where it should be on the other pulleys and you look at it from the side the crank is definitely pulling it at an angle forward as compared to the alternator, which would make you think that the crank is too far out. This probably sounds like a bunch of jibberish. I guess what I am saying is visually it seems as if the pulleys are lined up as is, but I don't get why it is pulley the belt out on the crank pulley making it NOT line up with the others. Any help would be great. :nice:

I think I get what you're saying. If the belt is moving away from the front of the block, and when the belt is lined up correctly on all of the pulleys, looking at it from the side, the crank pulley appears farther forward than the others?

Are all the bolts tight? How long have you had that balancer on? Is it the same thickness? Is there any offset in the way it sits compared to the stock? Have you changed pulleys? Could the crank pulley be a different offset than stock?

Sounds like you're on the right track...just keep investigating.
 
could the balancer be on its way out, and spinning un-balanced? if anyone could understand that.

if nothing has hit or damaged you crank pulley recently and it's not loose. then the only thing that i could think that could make it not spin in alignment is the balancer it's attached to.
 
The crank pulley being too far out from the engine is causing the issue, correct? I might be tempted to pull the balancer off and see if it was fully seated, to begin with. Romac balancers can be awfully tight going on, so it may not have been on all the way, thus throwing off your alignment.
 
See that's the thing I'm not sure if its is too far out or too far in. The fact that the crank pulley pulls the belt out makes me think the pulley is too far in. Also since it shredding on the front side. However, after the belt pulls itself out to where it wants to go, looking at the motor from the side, the belt is at a pretty good angle from the alternator to the crank meaning that when the belt pulls itself out, its taking itself out of alignment with the other pulleys, which to me makes no sense and makes me think the pulley would be too far out. Make sense?

Oh, btw, my Romac is virtually brand new.
 
I havent touched my motor in ages so bear with me...


But the crank pulley can go on 2 different ways. There are different offsets associated with each way also because the mounting tabs arent in the middle of the the pulley.


What all have you changed since you blew the head gasket? I know you were supposed to get it tuned last fall, but didnt and u had what u thought was an intake gasket failure. Has the balancer come off at all since the last time the belt was going around fine? I know those damn Romacs can be TIGHT. So the only way i can imagine it not being all the way on is if u took it off and didnt put it back on all the way. But with u just doing the top end starting with intake gaskets and then down to the heads, i cant imagine why you'd take off the balancer. And if the bolt in the end of the crank shaft is torqued, plus how tight romacs fit, i cant imagine the balancer sliding off towards the front of the car.....


Which is why i think the pulley must be flip flopped. Its a small change but it could make the difference. Take the belt off, yank out those 4 bolts, flip the pulley around and see if that makes a difference. Atleast at that point you'll know that you brought the pulley towards the front of the car or the rear of the car and hopefully if its not fixed, you'll have a better idea on where to look for the problem.
 
Problem solved. The power steering pulley was the problem. It was not on there quite far enough, which is why the belt was getting drawn out on the crank. Problem solved, new belt on, turns good. Now unless something else comes up I'm ready for the tune. :nice:

Cool. Glad u got it fixed. When are you comin down to get it tuned? You coming down for the telegraph cruise(if u know about it)?

I wanna see that car in person!

Not sure when I'm getting it tuned. Need to save $600 first. I should probably call soon cause I think hes usually about 2 weeks out, which is about how long I need.

Never heard of the Telegraph cruise. Just Woodward, which I went to years ago with the car and never would again. What a congested nightmare. Idk if you guys over there have heard of the Metro cruise, but in August we have that over here. It's been going for a few years now and is just like the Dream cruise just probably a quarter the size, but still huge.
