Howdy y'all. I have a silly cylinder balance test question...is it normal to get mixed results on a slightly modified car (1989 5.0 LX 5 speed)?
I built the engine last year and only have 3,500 miles on it - it had been running great until my second new Motorcraft TFI module went out two weeks ago. I ended up finding a NOS TFI module on eBay and the car seems to be running great again. I drove it around for about 45 minutes and decided to do the KOEO / KOER / CBT tests. KOEO flashes 11, KOER flashes 94 & 44 (smog pump removed and lines plugged), and CBT 8 3. I ran the CBT a day later after a bit of driving and got 6 4 2. I ran the test in its 2nd iteration and got 8 7 6 3 2.
The block is from 2002 mountaineer that I had a local machine shop work on for me. Its .020 over with all new bearings, gt40p heads, tfs valve springs, tfs1 cam, tfs 6.300 pushrods, scorpion 1.6rr, frpp lifters, explorer intake, 19lb explorer injectors, gt40p heads, 65mm tb, 70mm maf from a 95 cobra, frpp headers, bassani catted x pipe. All of this stuff was brand new out of the box - even the explorer heads/intake/injectors. I even installed all new sensors, screamin' demon ignition coil, livewires, nos motorcraft distributor, taylor cap/rotor, frpp water pump, etc. I bought all new stuff because the stuff it replaced was 20+ years old and had 466K miles on it when the old crank/block broke because of a bad thrust bearing.
The spark plugs look great, vacuum at idle is 13.5, idle is at 850 rpms, and timing is at 12 degrees. I have checked the salt/pepper shakers and all of the engine grounds. I am not sure where to go from here. I know it sounds crazy, but even with it running good it bothers me knowing that the CBT is returning all of those cylinders and not a 90.
Any words of wisdom?
