Single chamber flowmasters

I too wanted something considerably louder then what I had which was two chamber 40's. After building my motor there was a considerable amount of back pressure, so much so that my new motor would barely run. So I went straight down to the muffler shop (without enough money for new mufflers) and I had them yank out the 2 1/4 pipe meeting my headers and remove the 2" pipe after the mufflers. Then I had them install 2 1/2" from the headers back to the mufflers (same 2 chamber 40's) and then I had him install some 3" dumps turned so they point where my rear tires meet the ground.
I got just what I was looking for, much much louder and added a much deeper tone that just thunders. It gets a LOT of attention when I roll it into car shows and cruise-in's. No one can believe it's just a built 289. They all laugh like I'm joking with them as if I don't want to tell them what the engine really is.

Long story shorter, 2 chambers can be really loud depending on how free flowing you make your pipes and larger diameter pipes make a deeper tone. Give it some thought and see what you can do to make your pipes as straight as possible for a louder sound.

Maybe ill just save the money and buy the electronic adapters so i can open them with a switch :nice:

Gentlemen.... I've actually seen(and heard) this before. It was definitely a life changing experience for me... Why? Can't remember the year of the fastback 65ish, but it had a huge Paxton Supercharger(Polished, of course...) under the hood. Man, that car was a thing of beauty. The guy actually did my exhaust for me, but I definitely didn't have the money for the electronic cut out!

One day when I go cruising, I'll get a picture of his car and post it. Hopefully he'll let me get a pic of the powerplant.

Well.....i got ****ing had......by the way i think it sounds awosme looks great too man!!

But i just found out something....the flows that were on the car....were 3 chamber 50 series :( :( :(

This may explain why i didnt like the sound and got cut outs :(

The case on them are 17 inches.....the 2 chambers are 13 inches....****er

I only paid 50 bucks for both but i guess thats what happend when your 16....**** lol

i have to fix the rust and build the motor first lol

That's why the two chamber Flows aren't that loud. I had them on my stock '89GT and they weren't bad. After putting in a cammed aluminum head engine(engine in my sig), they were a LOT louder. Too loud, in fact. I have 24" Thrush glasspacks on my '68 and they are done in the Shelby style, ie, dumped in front of the back tires. My head was pounding after driving 60 miles to work. I came home with earplugs in and getting on the throttle it still felt uncomfortably loud. I'm probably going to get an x-pipe with some Dynomaxes and run the exhaust out the back.

But hey, if you're already deaf, what is there to lose, right?

Hey shelby bro read my post two above yours...

It turns out i never had the 2 chamber 40's on the car...so i dont even know what 40's would sound like...

The casing on the mufflers i have measure 17 inches...2 chambers should measure 13 but these measure 17 which are the 50 series (3 chamber)

I think im gonna go the borla route though....it sounds sick

So is the XX pipe better for power? how different will it sound compared to a H pipe are jsut straight duals liek i had?

Yeah, just a little bit. They do the same job than an H-pipe does, but an X kills some of the low-frequency drone/rumble/etc. Unlike an H shape, the X forces both sides to equalize a little better. On a sub-400hp n/a street car there won't be enough difference to feel, but the sound is different. True duals, IMO, suck. They have a nostalgic sound, but I don't care for it. My '68 has true duals, BTW. It sounds like an odd-fire 4-cylinder on either side of the car.
