I'm sure this has been posted before, but I can't recall seeing it. so here goes...I've always hated needing two keys for my mustangs. As most of you probably know, the special service mustangs came equipped with single key lock sets. There is one company that sells these online, for $400 a set! I talked with a locksmith today. Apparantly there is something he called a "fleet" lock. He would order two of these (door lock cylinders) and then key them to work with my square ignition key. The company he uses doesn't stock the hatchback or glovebox locks, but he did say that the hatchback lock shouldn't be too hard to find. Since my glovebox lock fell out years ago, and is now wired in the "unlock" position, I'm not really concerned with that one. Maybe I'm the only dumb@$$ that didn't know this was an option, but anyone else who wants a single key for their mustang should call a locksmith. I forgot to ask why he couldn't just key the ignition key to work in the doors; I got the impression that wasn't possible with the stock lock cylinders. The best part of the whole thing is the price: the "fleet" door lock cylinders are $16 apiece, and figure another ten bucks for him to key them. hope this helps somebody out.

IIRC, it's the glovebox and decklid locks that are the porblem. No one seems to car about the glovebox, though. The door locks can be swapped from other Ford vehicles, like the 1991 and earlier Crown Vic fleet cars, but the decklid lock was special made for the Mustang. I know some folks that are trying to modify a Crown Vic trunk lock to make it work in a Mustang, but so far, no luck.

If you want a complete single-key lock set, find an old SSP being parted out, or get ready to pay about $400.

Same here. Double

But for $400 I'm willing to deal with three keys.

i know a good locksmith can pull apart the lock and re-pin it for almost any key...i've even done it myself! if you are good with mechanics i suggest finding an old ignition lock cylinder that fits your car(not the one from your car), and try rearranging the pins so it works with a door key...you dont need to have all the pins in(there is usually about 4-6), 2-3 working pins should be fine, the only downside being that it's now easier for someone to use a lock-pick on your ignition..This might take an hour but it's worth it in the end, most parts stores will sell you a new lock cylinder for about 10 bucks to practice on BTW

The problem is not just that the keys are cut differently for the ignition, they have a different cross section, so the key won't even fit into the lock.

$400 WTF?

Try here for replacement lock sets...
http://www.mustangsunlimited.com/itemdy01.asp?T1=LS92+01&Category=&catkey=74-01

I have one of these kits.
The doors and the hatch use the same key.
The ignition key is separate, as mentioned previously.

$400 for a COMPLETE, single-key lock set. That includes, ignition, doors, decklid, and glovebox.

If you can deal with having only the doors and ignition keyed the same, while the trunk and glovebox remain stock, you can look for an older, Ford fleet vehicle and pull it's ignition and door locks.

my car uses the same key for the doors and hatch, and a different one for the ignition..no glove box lock. From what you guys say there should be a separate hatch key? that would suck

There is normally an ignition key. Then there is a second key for everything else. Dos keys.
