Hi all, Ive searched for this question in the archives and found some reponses. Basically, ive found a potential 65 mustang to purchase but its is a six cly automatic.

Speed and performance dont really matter to me that much. All i really would like is to get a stronger sound on it with only modest performance gains. Id rather sound like a badass but not have to pay for the gas... haha

What type of setup would i have to look at to accomplish this? Dual exhaust? Headers? the less the better.

Besides changing the brakes, would i have to look at anything else like the trans, the rear end? etc because of the performance boost?

i plan to talk to my muffler guy tmrw

Thanks all

nick

You migt try www.fordsix.com . Those guys seem to have a pretty good handle on the inline six's.

You can leave everything the same. You won't see much of a performance gain. In fact, you may lose some torque if the new exhaust system is too much for the engine.

The truth? You cant really get a 6 to sound like an 8. With that being said, you can make a 6 sound mean. Like posted, go to the six site, they have some good info there.

I think a six can sound like an 8 at low revs with the right exhaust. I was asked numerous times if I had swapped a V8 into my Falcon just after I put a new exhaust system on it. Extractors, high flow cat & freeflowing Lukey 2.5" muffler and resonator.

Any six at high revs sounds like a six....

A six with split headers and a loud muffler still sounds like a six. Keep your foot in it and it'll get the mileage an eight will. Keep your foot trained with a V8 and it'll get the mileage of a six.

I've never heard an I6 sound like a V8. I've heard some that the owner said, "that sounds like a V8 doesn't it." It still sounded like an I6 to me. If you want the V8 sound you'll have to buy a V8 car or swap the 6 out.

Sounding like a V8 isn't always that great. When I bought my '95 it had some old Flowmasters welded into the stock pipes. It sounded like an old pick-up truck. Especially when the broken baffling in the Crapmasters would rattle.

Got the Macs on it and now it sounds mean.

I guess what I'm trying to say is, try to compliment the tone of the I6 instead of trying to make it sound like a truck. Something like a Magnaflow with a resonator should give it a good european sportscar sound.

Here is a different idea. Just go get yourself a big stereo and record a car that you like the sound of and just blast the music when you want the sound. Maybe you could record a turbo car and got some of the pphhhhhhh sounds. That would really stump some people.

Sorry, I couldn't resist.

You can make and i have heard a few inline six's that sound pretty throaty but the only way to get v-8 sound is with a v-8. But your inline six has alot of performance potential.

Ditto that, especially if you haven't even bought the car yet. If it's a coupe, there are far too many nice coupes with 289's to settle for a six, and the price isn't all that different, not to mention the work and money needed to swap in a small block later on. With '65's pretty much everything is different on 6 cylinder cars, spindles, brakes, wheels, trans, rear axle, throttle linkage, the list is endless as is the money you spend on nickel-and-dime parts to do a complete swap.
