For like the past three weeks, it takes my car a little longer than usual to start up, usually it would start right up, but now it takes like 8 or 9 seconds. The check engine light has been on for like a month but it was for excessive egr flow and lean in bank one. could that be part of it. i was going to replace the egr valve in the next couple days, but i dont know what would cause the hard starts. I also started to notice alot of fluid coming out of the tailpipes. im not sure if its just water or if its gas. any help is greatly appreciated.

Well the excessive EGR flow code is for a bad DPFE, this is a very very common problem.. Now the lean code on one bank is interesting? can you pull the codes again and post them with the code numbers.
BTW some ford over the years have had a problemw ith anti drain back valves in the fuel pump going bad, when this happens you will have extended cranking problems only when you first start the engine after it has sat for awile.

ill get the exact numbers later today.when i went i had four codes but two were for the the same egr and the other two were for the lean bank one. the spark plugs were replaced about a month ago, probably 1,500 miles tops on them.
and this is only when the car is cold. when the car is warm is starts up just fine.

he is wrong about the 02 sensor that will not fix a p0171.. that code is for lean bank 1 what you need to do is pull up live data and look at the long term fuel trim for both banks.. Do not listen to the parts store guys about how to fix the car they are not trained mechaincs. EEC diagnostics involves a lot of skill and just pulling codes will not tell you wnough to fix some problems.
the p0402 is excessive egr flow detected. this is the DPFE sensor, it's a very common problem.
so if you can get the long term fuel trim for both banks I want to see if bank 2 is close to throwing a lean code or not.

Man, it sure sounds like what was happening when my fuel pump was going bad. Popped in a Holley one and I still haven't heard a full crank before it starts! F'n sweet.
