Hey guys, I have a question. Hope someone can help...
I bought a 2004 gt with 28,000 original miles for $9,800. But the reason for the post is that the car seems to have no acceleration when you put your foot in it. It only picks up marginally from regular throttle input for a lack of a better term. It is a 5 speed, so I considered that it may be a clutch issue at first... yet nothing seems to point to that really. The rpms are staying put...or should I say that as they go up, actual acceleration is in line with what the tach shows. No over revving or anything. This car just seems insanely slow to me for some reason. Has no punch, or giddy up and go. In neutral the tach sweeps very fast, but in gear, under load, it is slow as molasses going up hill in the winter. Any ideas?

As you will soon find out, these cars are slow in stock form. Mid 14's in a quater mile slow. But hey, if you put a good $3k-$4k in mods you may be able to hit 14 flat.

Seriously though, do a tune up. With that low of miles, I would give the whole fuel system a once over. Chances are that it has been sitting a while with bad gas in it.

Does the car run fine other than the lack of power? Any CELs?

No offense but what gear are you in when getting on it? If its 5th you are going to be dissapointed due to not only the O.D gear but also the crappy 3.27s in the rear end that ford cursed these cars with. These cars are not all that slow. My cousin has run a best of 13.8 on street tires with nothing more then 3.73s a TB and plenum, crappy roush CAI, and a canned 91 oct tune.

If the car really has zero punch I would replace the fuel filter, clean your injectors, replace the PCV and air filter for starters along with some new quality plugs. Check for vacum leakes too with a can of carb cleaner.

C'mon guys, I realize that these cars aren't the quickest things on the road, but from his description it sounds like a Honda SUV could outrun it. I'd have a tune-up done along with replacing the fuel filter, cleaning the MAF, and everything else that darkside03gt said.

I have to throw this out there.....OP, are you absolutely sure you bought a GT and not a V6? I've seen a lot of dealers advertise and try to sell V6 Mustangs as GT's or Cobras. Just sayin'

^ I'm with Nightfire on this one. Seriously, I drive a stock NPI GT and even then I feel pushed back in my seat when I floor it. It's not the fastest car, but if mine will do that stock with 2.73's then there's definitely something wrong with his car.

OP, if you want this figured out, let us know. You have not responded and are a brand new member. I'd suggest you start replying to those trying to help you out.

This can be somewhat settled later tonight. A quick drive of the car, check out the engine and look for obvious signs. Then, make a couple passes at the track. Houston has no 1/4 tracks. The OP lives where our track is located.

I apologize for not responding sooner, but I have to do it at work. My laptop went down and so no way to do it at home. I work from 5:30 am till 6:00 pm 6 days a week, and a newborn baby girl at home waiting... I certainly appreciate all the feedback. I know some stuff about cars but not gifted like the majority on this site. This is my second Mustang. Last one was a 90' lx coupe. It's been years...
Anyway, it is a GT for sure. It seems to run fine other than being slow. And yes I am sure a Honda SUV could take me right now, with the lack of acceleration. It is crazy really. And yes winters98gt you can drive it if it will help the situation. I ran only 93 octane for 1500 miles when I first got it, but yes I will change the fuel filter, plugs, etc and check for vacum leaks. I will see what happens. I will update the progress. Meanwhile thank you for your advice and opinions. It is greatly appreciated

oh, and I tend to get on it in 1st thru 3rd. I figured out the futility of trying to push it in 5th the first 5 minutes I owned it.

$3-4k? Mine has about $400 in bolt ons with street tires and stock gearing and I've run a best of 14.077 @ 101....and I though that was running slow... That's also on a 245 bidgestone rear tire. I'm thinking with my new 285 Nitto's I should be able to break into the 13's.

I know these aren't tthe fastest cars in the world, but they aren't exactly slow... Though the stock Mustangs now run mid to high 12's in the quarter, we've gotta remember that even the 05-09's only ran mid-13's....

Thanks bud I thought about black wheels but I'm really liking the anthracite. Here it is with unsaturated colors Lighting doesn't quite bring out the blue though.
