Well I recently did the h/c/i swap...and did not notice this symptom before the swap...

Well when I drive for a while and the car gets warmed up...I'll park it (getting gas for example)...and after I fill it up I go to start the car it slowly lugs to start...sometimes I have to try twice...but when the engine is cool or cold it has no problems starting...

Now remember this didn't happen before the h/c/i swap...the starter or headers haven't changed...

Is it just because the timing is at 16* compared to the 12* of before

Any suggestions appreciated...

i had the same problems after i did my H/C/I swap but i also moved my battery to the trunk. My starter was rather old so i decided to get a starter from a 92 up which is smaller and is gear reduction. I haven't had any problems since.

If theres too much timing it will only crank a inch or 2 at a time kind of romping, if its heatsoaked from longtubes i think it does the same thing. I put a heat shield/blanket around mine and dont have any cranking issues it just wont fire after it warms up different problems.

Why does timing affect cranking though? Thats what i'd like to know, not like compression changes how does the starter pick up on it when its just either power on or off no other input

Well I have a 93 so I have the smaller starter...

I have Mac Equal Length headers...same as before the swap...

I would really like to find a solution to this...because I'm in a lot of stop and go traffic and sometimes I let off the clutch to quick and it dies...and I can't get the car started back again...imagine that in stop and go traffic... ...I can get it started within 5-60 seconds depending on how hot the car ismy car runs cooler than it did before though also...

did you get the 58cc 165's, if so your compression may have something to do with your starting woes... a device that retards timing at startup wouldnt hurt in this case, and it = less stress when starting the motor..

Yeah I have the 58cc heads...but that only makes compression to a little over 9 to 1 compression ratio...what is this device and how much does it cost...

The car only does it when it is hot...it has no problems at all starting when cold or cool...

your starter is heat soaked... I can almost gaurentee that is your problem.. As soon as i put on my MAC equal length headers, my starter did the exact same thing till it fried... Now my starter is starting to go on me again.. Either i am going to buy a mini, or heat wrap my next one... But that is 99.9 percent your problem

I never had the same problem before the headswap and I had the same exact headers on their before...I reused them...when it is hot it turns over slowly and barely "catches" to start...
