I'm getting a new engine next spring and I'm trying to decide between a 408 and a 533. The 533 makes 100hp/145lbs more than the 408, but is it worth the addition in weight? Is there a big difference? Also these engines are the same price, so dont take that into account.

460# for a 302, add another 40 or so if it's FI
720# for a 429-460
625# for an FE based engine..

big block all the way.. you can get way more HP.. I'm looking at about 800HP out of my 557..

this also depends on a number of factors...ex: aluminum block and heads etc... my dads FE motor weighs the same as my 331

IMO.... 100 hp/145 lbs-ft will erase any difference in weight. The 385 series big blocks are thin wall castings. The iron block SOHC/DOHC 4.6's weigh almost as much as a 460.

Both engine's fit easy. But obviously require specific swap parts.

Both engines come with aluminum heads. The 408 would be carbed.
