The other day I was driving my 93 5.0 Mustang and the serpentine belt came off. The reason the belt came of is because my smog pump pulley went bad. The pulley is just hanging there and will not stay steady to keep the belt on. This is the second time I have replaced the smog pump in 6k miles do to this problem. I have heard from some people that this is a common problem which I have never heard of. The other option is that my belt tensoner makes the belt way to tight and the weakest link is the smog pump pulley causing it to go out. I bought a smaller belt to by-pass the smog pump. Will this work as a fix or just a temp fix? I appreciate any help you guys can give me.

do that and go buy an anderson PMS so you can tune the car to pass emissions.

The pulleys come it two different flavors and the mounting is not quite the same. The pulley size is different too. If the bolt holes in the pump's aluminum hub are bad, the pulley won't stay on.

i have that same setup on my car, because my smog pump is seized. it is a perfectly safe thing to do. the only concern is emissions. if you have to have the car "smogged", you'll need a functional smog pump. if you have a visual check (like PA), you can just put the old belt on for inspection and then put the short belt back on afterwards. if you don't have emissions, leave it as it is.

Thanks for all of the help guys. I am from South Dakota which has NO emissions tests. I will replace the smog pump but not hook it up. The only reason I would have to hook it up is if I get stationed somewhere that requires the smog test like California. If this happens I will put the original belt on just for the test.

The best way to eleminate a problem is the eleminate the part that is causing the problem. No, you don't need a smog pump to pass emmisions especailly on a EFI car due to the rich/lean cycling.
