well, i got a letter from the city today that someone reported my car was smoking and that i must have it fixed in 30 days. Now, the truth is, it does smoke a little but I dont want to go spend a lot of $$$ to fix the problem because I want to start building my stroker So, my question is, Is there some sort of additive i can add to my oil to stop the white smoke for rite now?

start your car. stand behind it. is it smoking at idle?

if it is, you're running it too rich at idle. either fix the mixture or turn the idle down.

if it's not, then it might be something a bit more. most likely your idle though.

I don't think white smoke is an indication of burning oil. The way I learned it as a kid is:

White smoke = Coolant or water in the cylinder
Blue smoke = Oil in the cylinder

I find it hard to believe that based on a tip from a citizen that the city would send you a notice for repair. That's just odd. Where do you live?

you can't always tell by the color of smoke. when i had my edelbrock on my car, it had a ****ty booster gasket and was dumping fuel at idle. it spit out white smoke out the back.

i've had an engine over-filled with oil and it was spitting it out the breather tube, into the air cleaner, and the smoke was white with black soot.

color isn't always a tell-all

Tell them you are fixing it, you're getting a new motor and that it takes a little time for a classic.

Then report all the city vehicles for smoking.

Around here there are no laws about emissions on classic cars before 68 or so.

I say dump in some seafoam and run around town like that. Seafoam + wot = best smokshow ever

i thought it was white smoke but im not sure because its very light smoke and its very hard to tell. And, i do go through a lot of oil, not really sure on how much but i know that its more than the normal amount. As for the city, they just want the smoke gone, THATS IT! and thats why i just wanted to get some opinions on what types of additives i can use and would work well.

I've heard that synthetic oil doesn't smoke like conventional oil. I don't know if it is true or not.

If you are going through, say a quart of oil or so per tank of gas, then you may want to dump a can of STP or Motor Honey in it.

If you live in California the city can't do anything to you in regard to your car.

The California Air Resources Board, however, can.

My buddy in Modesto had a concours restored Torino with less than 500 miles on it. When it say the car was perfect, BELIEVE IT. He got a letter from the air board because somebody called it in as a prank. He didn't think it was funny one bit.

I'll call him and ask him how he took care of it.

Dood, all cars in California that are pre-1975 are smog exempt. Tell them there is nothing they can do about it.

Being smog exempt is one thing in California, but you can still get a ticket for excessive smoking. My 67 coupe would smoke a lot during the summer after idling too long. I tried the additives but it didn't heelp much.

I switched to straight 50w racing oil and now notice very little smoke out of the exhaust. Yeah it's thick, but worth it for now.
