So how do 4.10's FEEL?

They obviously own 3.73's but my biggest concern, how do they feel at highway speeds? Ive tried driving around 60-65 in 4th to get a feel for it and the engine sounds so loud and stressed, not used to hearing that and not sure if I could get used to it. Also, not sure if it's a fair comparison. Another thing ive been thinking about is all im missing out on is the hard launch in 1st gear... b/c really with 3.27's if you just drive on the highway in 4th gear, isn't that basically the exact thing as driving in 5th with 4.10's? That makes it seem kind of pointless because anytime I want the 4.10 feel I can just shift to a lower gear and I also have the option of shifting into 5th and cruising along quietly. is that about right? Or is it actually a totally different feel?

(note: my car will never see the track so i'm looking at it from a daily driver point of view)

It's really hard to explain. Once you've been in a car with different gearing than your own, you'll be able to understand. The car is simply a different animal. It's basically an adjustment of how the car accelerates. You should gain considerable low end pulling while losing a bit on the high end. Which, for some people is ideal, depending on how steep you go.

I went with 4.10's, and im still breaking them in. You will have to shift alot around town, and cruising on the highway gives you high higher rpms. 65 mph at the rpms are around 2500 i think. 70 and your at like 3000. I dont remeber the actual numbers, its been a while since i drove the car now that im back at school, and i only drove it for 60 miles since the gear install. However, the pull in each gear is noticably greater. I didnt have to downshift into 4th on the high way to pull past people. Just floor it, and it feels like your in 4th. The change is that noticable. I didnt give it any full throttle blasts in any gear, and i havent gone over 3000 rpms since im still breaking them in. So im really anxious to get home and rip on it.

p.s i would go with 4.10's unless you drive ont he highway allot, or if you do go on the highway, just stay around 65-70 and it should be o.k. With 4.10's you usually only loose 1-2 mpg.

I think the best way to explain it is you feel more "connected" to the car.

You feel like you're much more in control of the car...no accidently drifting her up to 90-100mph in 5th because you were day-dreaming.

In the city...you can litterally drive around in 4th gear if you want.

You let go of the pedal...the car slows...you gas it..she GOES!

You're more "connected"...where ever you want to go...you can drive the car there.

I agree with that as well. The car really does speed up and slow down much more noticably. You let off the gas, and the car noticably slows down quicker.

Just drive 1 gear lower than you usually do in the city and hwy and that is what 4.10's are like.

example:

4th gear 3.27's = 5th gear 4.10's
3rd gear 3.27's = 4th gear 4.10's
2nd gear 3.27's = 3rd gear 4.10's
1st gear 3.27's = 2nd gear 4.10's

I almost didn't get a 4:10 cause I did what you just did, drove on the freeway in 4th gear thinking thats how 5th gear would feel with a 4:10, But thats not the case your RPM on 5th gear w/ a 4:10 is much lower. 5th gear @3K RPM with my 4:10s I'm almost doing 90mph. 2nd gear now feels like in between 1st and 2nd with 3:27...normal driving I start out in 2nd gear..I only use 1st gear during stoplight confrontation or startout 2nd gear if I'm racing a ricer.

BTW is starting in second ok with 4.10's? Do you hurt anything, I know i've been told not to do so with 3.27s.

just get the 4.10s, problem is once you have them you wish had gotten 4.30s. Seriously, If I ever buy another stang, this will the first mod.

yea i would say 4.10s all the way everything they have said is true. You'll run about the same in the 1/4 depending on driver (.1-.2 quicker) and i've lined up with cars that have 3.27 and 3.73's and off the line you pull hard on them and they people with the 3.73s are like wtf how did you do that

It shouldn't hurt anything, it's only bad if you stay on the clutch longer than you should..with the 4:10 starting from 2nd gear, I let go the clutch and barely give it gas and the car just goes. You can skip shift without bogging the engine as in shifting from 1st to 3rd or starting in 2nd to 4th.. what I like the most about this gear is you can just leave it on 1st gear, floor it before you know it your cooking the rear tires..get it already!
