Actually I have read in 3 different publications that the sound clips were made using a 5.0 Mustang ! And yes, there was 1 real Shebly in the movie--The one given as the gift at the end of the movie that needed to be restored was real. I have a magazine somwhere that was full of interesting bits about the movie cars. I'll seee if I can locate it !

I had always thought the sound was edited in from recordings made of a big block 67 vette, the ones with sidepipes. Kind of disgusting that they would use vette sound effects for a mustang, but, meh who knows. All the "legit" sources I've read state a different source for the sound. The vette does have a definate similarity though. The scene where he's in the alley, right before he breaks off the rear view mirror, when its idling right then it sounds just like a big block vette. Whatever the sound is from, its definately from real sidepipes. If you've ever experienced sidepipes, you'll know what I mean, there is a certain spacial/hollow effect created by it.
