i never would have bought one new and paid full price but i did buy a used for cheap and installed it two summers ago to see what the thing would do. wasnt that impressed with my results. i do like the fact that it kept the fans on alot of the time and the car ran REALLY cool ( a plus to those running u/d pullies ).

since then, coincidental or not, my cars gas mileage has been terrible. i cant check it because my odometer and trip locked up a few years ago. also when under load with the rpms up around 4-4500, i can hear noise and i believe its pinging. i always run high octane in the car.

hypertech claims potientional fuel mileage gains and improved performance. is there any way it could have caused poor mileage and pinging at high rpm? the chip was just taken out so i havent had time to put any miles on it yet without it

also, i hear about 94/95s have some sort of timing retard between shifts that hinders performance somewhat. does it really make that big of a difference? if it does, how can i fix that - bump timing?

Reset your car to base timing (10*) and this may help you out... too much timing will give you what you describe...

Does your EGR work...

If you want to get into it, my car ran like yours did and I have been TwEECing my way out of it... (www.tweecer.com)...

That hyperjunk chip can cause the issues you are having. Throw it in the garbage where it belongs!

ive never messed with my cars timing but whose to say it hasnt been changed by the previous owner. cant you bump the timing so much from the base and gain some improvements without having the ping issue?

the egr....i dunno?

tweecer....i dont feel confident enough to use that

Tip-in retard is removed via tuning. Bumping timing is not a solution.

If your fuel system is lacking, you can get pinging under higher demand conditions like you noted. A clogged filter or weak pump are examples of items that can be problematic.

Random pinging can also be your distributor. When mine went out, my timing was going crazy.

i have drove the car several times after taking out the hypertech . believe it or not, i can tell a difference. the pinging at high rpm seems to not be there and the fuel mileage seems to be better ( cant check it bc my odometer and trip are locked ) BUT with the chip out the throttle response is not near as crisp and quick. also, it doesnt pull as hard as it did when the chip was in. not a huge difference but it is definetly noticeable
