So I went to set my timing and..

So I pulled out the sprout from the distributer and turned on the car and the rpm's started to surge out of controll. So I tried again and again it happened. So I couldn't do anything with the timing. Anyone know why that would happen I never had problems with this process before?

The motor was warmed up all the way, right?
Pulling the SPOUT should retard the timing, which often slows the idle speed down, not speed it up (nor should it create major surging - some surging for a few seconds is kinda normal as it hunts for a new idle with no timing advance).

I agree with HISSIN50 on this one.

The only other thing I do different is start the car first then pull out the spout with the car already running.
