not my mustang, but my first car... 1972 oldsmobile cutlass (442 clone)

i got this car my senior year of high school, and i'll be 23 in may so that's a pretty long time for me, this was my first car and first project, i didn't realize how hard it would be to actually let it go to someone else... i know this is a mustang forum but i just figured i'd post this on here, seeing as most of you can sympathize with the sale of a car you love or had loved for a long time

There was a guy down the street where i grew up who was restoring the same year 442 for like 15 years...i don't think it ever got finished. I've sold some cars that i was really into and i know it can be hard. It's like breaking up with a really good girlfriend.

well, after 5 years of being parked in my driveway with my dad's sprinkler system running for three hours a night in the summer, the rust gremlins on this already 36 year old car started to show through... it needed a full trunk pan and a driver's side floor pan, something beyond my capabilities at the moment... i also need to save money for graduate school, because archaeologists get paid next to nothing... so my toy had to go

Sounds like you still have a nice '91 coupe to play with.

Looking back i've actually had a few cars i was close to. One was a super rare '76 Buick Apollo GSX that i wasn't old enough to drive and my mother made me sell.

Another was an '87 Cavalier Z24...which might sound silly but it was ultra clean, i bought it from my cousin who was a mechanic and it was maintained like a show car, and it was really my first car for all intensive purposes or at least the first car i could legally go out and drive. I had a lot of good memories in that car. I bought it for $400 and sold it for $800..lol.

Another was an '80 Dodge Challenger which is also super rare. They were actually a Mitsubishi Galant that was sold over here as a Mitsubishi Scorpion, Plymouth Sapparo and Dodge Challenger. It was a carbed 4 cylinder 5 speed rear wheel drive car and actually got up and went for what it was.

The one that really sticks in my mind was my first car. 84.5 GT350 Hatch, man that thing was clean and 184hp is good for a teenager Sold it for 2500 and the ONLY thing wrong was a quarter size rust hole in the passenger rear quarter low behind the tire. I wanted an IROC

My first car (given to me) was a 89 Mazda 323. Glad to see it go because the first car I ever bought was my mustang and I don't see it ever being sold.

I actually have an odd story. I sold my first car a '67 Dodge Polara 3-4 years ago when things were tight and I had just got my '89 LX on the road. I didn't need 2 projects and one had to go. The dodge was older and needed more work, took more gas, etc. It took a couple of weeks to sell but eventually a kid who lived down the road picked it up and I was heartbroken watching it drive off as it was my first project and first car. The kid moved and took the car within months and I never saw it again. Last month I get home to a message from the impound lot asking if i'm the owner of a '67 Dodge as their records last show. I phone them up, give them the kid's name and drivers license # I found off the old bill of sale and the number I had for him at the time as well as his old address. Time goes by and I don't hear anything then a registered letter comes telling me they were unable to find the kid and i'm legally responsible for the fees and pickup of the car. They wanted $225 and the car was mine. I phoned and talked with an agent and re-explained the situation and how I didn't think it was fair to take the kid's car even though she explained that his driver's license number no longer existed in the province and legally I could have it if I wanted. Ultimately I passed because it didn't seem right no matter how much I would've loved to have the old '67 back.
