So I'm currently getting at worst 180 miles per tank and at best 220 miles per tank. I drive 60/40 freeway (30 miles each day) and surface streets. I usually keep it in 4th gear (between 2500 and 2800 rpms @75-80mph) on the freeway if I need to maneuver and on 5th (2000 rpms @75-80mph) if it's just straight cruising. Before I go to get the car dynoed, do you fine fellow stangers think I'm running too rich? Should I be geting more mileage out of my tank?

The engine has 53000 miles on it and I fill it up with 87 or 91 at the pump. I have my mechanic change the oil every 3000 miles and this time I went after 3400 miles and the oil (5-20) came out black.

if thats the mileage youre getting youre driving more like an ass than you think.... not trying to be rude at all, but we drive muscle cars and its hard not to drive em like what they are...

I get anywhere between 120 and 320 on a tank with the mods I have. When I try to be real good and no racing at all, starting out in 2nd and shifting at 2500 I get 290 or so (this is my daily commute of 30 miles each way). When I drove to OK I was getting the 320 a tank but that was all freeway.

Go get it dyno'd that is the best way to see, mine runs on both sides of the spectrum and will continue to do so until my T/A and Chip I'm sure.
If its mileage youre worried about put her in 4th as soon as possible and 5th as much as possible (anythime over 65mph) Its so hard for me to do, everytime I'm like, ok I'm saving gas this week, no putting ricers in thier place and then a fart cannon pulls up next to me and I cant help it

Good luck on the dyno

believe it or not you will get into the gas more than you realize. stop and go driving is hell on gas mileage and it is a v-8 so that doesnt help much. good luck though

I'd say, drive smarter like mentioned above but also 53000miles is getting up there, maybe time for a good tune up besides the oil chage. that would be good for a few more miles a tank.... just my .02$

another thing to consider.. how much are you running the a/c ? ive only had my stang about a month,, but iv'e noticed i'll get at least 20 less miles on a tank of gas running the a/c full time vs. not running it. keep in mind this is alot of stop n go driving in hawaii.

I average about 20-22MPG's overall on regular unleaded. On normal around town driving I upshift at about 2500 RPM unless I need a bit more due to circumstances. On the highway, I get into 5th and down shift to 4th only when needed to pass.

Now and then I do like to hear WOT as I have Magnaflows and the free airbox mod with a K&N filter. It's music to my ears. But overall I just drive fairly conservatively.

The other suggestion above about getting a tuneup is a good one. Your air filter may be due for change etc...

I hope this helps. Good luck.

I don't think 53,000 miles is alot on the engine. Your engine should be fine with normal maintenance. I normally get around 250 - 275 miles per tank (50% city/ 50% highway), depending how often I get on it.

I was thinking the same thing, I have almost 53,000 on my 99 GT. Admittingly, thats not alot for a 5+ year old GT, but a two year old GT it is kinda high. But 53,000 is 53,000.
