Some progress pictures of my car getting painted!

Good progress today! I primered the entire car (probably overkill, but I am trying to get it as nice as I can), fenders, and then a few spots on my rear bumper and my side skirt. Tomorrow I sand the front bumper, and then primer that along with the hood. Then Thurs and Fri I sand sand sand, and hopefully (If I find someone) Friday night it gets sprayed. Saturday I will reassemble, and then Sunday I make the drive back to school in Tampa. Monday morning I have class all day and then sometime during the week I will be wetsanding the car. Stressful past two weeks but hopefully it will pay off! This is the first time I have seen my car dent free, I cant freaking wait to go :drive: :drive: :drive: ~!!!!.

what paint/primer brand/style you going with? Base clear, single stage enamel, or laq.?

quick question on how you sanded the front bumper

did you do it by hand with a block or did you use a machine?

i want to repaint my friont bumper, but never painted anything on a car before.

UPDATE: Just called a guy on a local forum to spray the paint at his shop, and he wanted $500 to spray sealer, base and clear. Well, after some chatting, looks like I am giving him $150, plus a 1974 351W shortblock I have....good part is I got the shortblock for FREE!!!.

As for paint, im using PPG Omni AU black(mbc9300), PPG omni primer, PPG sealer and the super nice (and way too much money) PPG deltron or whatever clear. As far as sanding bumpers, just use a small block, guide coat and sand away!

Alot, so far in materials I am in like 650 . Now that I learned a little, it would be alot less. The guys at the paintstore must have thought my car was hit by hail or something because they sold me like a gallon of filler, and a good amount of finishing putty. I didnt know how much I needed so I went ahead and bought it. Well I barely touched the filler and the finishing putty...and for my door dings, I could have done everything with that thing of finishing putty AND had some left over. That right there would have saved me $35 ish. Also, I primered my entire car. Since my paint was relatively smooth, I didnt need to do that. I used like 5 quarts of primer and at $16 a bottle+$13 for the hardner...its pretty expensive. Probably could have used just 2, which would have saved me $87. I also bought way too much reducer, which if I dont use the nice stuff I have, I can return one bottle and save $40. I also messed up spraying a couple places which I had to spend lots and lots of time fixing my mistakes. Basically next time it would be Primer:30+24(primer+hardener), 3 quarts of base coat(since I have a whole body kit, mirrors, tc to be painted) $66, Clear coat $130+$55 for hardener, $28 for the sealor, $10 for grease remover, $10 for filler...and thats about it. Comes out to $353+another $50 for random stuff = $400. PLUS I could prob find all this stuff cheaper online for the next time BUT if its your first time I say spend more just so you can ask them for advice...it was well worth it.

3qrts to a gall. is about right really. Everyone I have talked too and everything I have done (painted my first car as a learner in my late teens) needed 1gal. to get good coverage/coats...your going to need 3 or so base coats and 3 or so clear coats as well...reducer is not bad to have around extra anyway...really nice at cleanups around the house and odd stuff.

Learned the hard way to not get less than a gal. paint runs the risk of running thin and getting shady coverage...you start freaking out "damn, I need to get this thing covered as I am almost out of paint" you speed up and quality goes to crap. Same with primer if not moreso since its sealing the underside and what the base coat will "hold" onto in the end.

True, but for cleanups around the house I would rather use $10 worth from home depot then the stuff I bought for $40.
