I just finished my Cobra Intake swap, and its running really bad now, it wont even start. After like 5 min of trying to start it runs like absolute crap, firing order sounds like its way off!! I triple checked the plugs for the right order and there right!! If the car runs for a min, BAM loud backfires!! I tried moving the dizzy around to see if it was the timing, and nothing still the same, i dunno what else to check, You guys gotta help!!!

"the other thing thats screwed in by two bolts off,"

The TFI module? is it a rectangle located on the side of the dizzy? You could have messed it up and may need to get another. Are you sure you have no vaccum leaks? That would be the first thing to check...

Definte timing issue!! If you have a timing Gun I would use that and set it to the proper setting. Every problem I've personally had with backfiring issues always came out to be Timing. I would set your timing around 8-10* Where is it backfiring? Out the exhaust or is it backfiring through the intake? I wouldn't try starting the car without the proper Timing settings. Good Luck!

Sometimes the timing jumps. We had it happen once. My friend dragged his car and half way down the track it started missing and backfiring. He never touched the timing, but yet somehow it jump. It's worth a try to check it. Good Luck!

If the timing is too far off it won't start or will have a very hard time turning over. If not, I'm sure the shop will be way worth your paint and headaches. Good Luck!

Definately timing related. I know you did not pull the dizzy however, just as a check i would pull the #1 plug out and crank the engine over by hand until you know #1 is at or around TDC. You will feel air pressure out of that plug hole when #1 is on the compression stroke and will basically stop when nearing TDC around 10* or so. You can check the timing marks on the damper and stop cranking when it hits 10*. Then note the rotor position which should be almost dead at the #1 post on the cap. If not then turn the dizzy until the reluctor and pickup are alligned. This should be close enough for you to fire it up anyway assuming everything else is ok.

A timing gun is useless in this situation. But if the above checks out then you are sure 1-3-7-2-6-5-4-8?!? counter-clockwise on dizzy?

How would it be the TFI module? I thought a failure of this kind would be stalling, bucking and crap like that. Backfiriing is valve timing or spark not going to the right cylnder or out of time so there is ignition when the exhaust valve is open? Or flooding so a wack of raw fuel getting into and igniting in the exhaust but i do not see how that is possible since the car can only run a couple seconds i am assuming.

GL man. Regards.

Sounds like distributor is not in correct.Bring up #1 piston on compression stroke and start over just to be sure.Set timing at 10 to start things off again.Let me know if it helped you any. AL.C.

Before you take it in. Pull the ignition module back off the dizzy and take it to a parts store like Advance or Autozone. They can test it for free.
