I just come back from my good friends house, I told him how I have plan get AFR 165s and sometime next year get blower too and if stock block can't hold I will turn into 331 ,
His anwer on that was , "first thing you can't go with 165 and put blower and meybe 331, that doesn't works good, so he told me TFS Twisted Wedge are good heads for that combo
BTW guys he works on Stangs since 1983 , right now he have 94 Mustang 347 with YS trim blower and runs high 9s on Trick flows
Sorry Paul and guys but looks like TFS Twisted Wedge are better heads for me

i may be wrong but i think the 165's have a smaller combustion chamber...and may not be all that well suited for boost...but now my question is this...if you have plans for a 331 anyways...why not get the 185's??? i would think a set of 185's would not be OVERKILL on a 302...and im sure they would work great on a boosted 302...and would work AWESOME on a boosted 331...

werd....just dont sell yourself short head wise if you plan on stepping up later....not on something $$$$ like heads anyway.

a bigger chamber isnt gonna hurt you, unless you get like 205's or Yates or Victors or some race only peice.

I believe the AFR 185's need flycut pistons . But, I've heard the same thing about Trick Flow heads.

I am running AFR 185's on my 302 with 8.5:1 compresion forged pistons and a Trick flow R upper and lower intake with no problems. See track time in sig.

No need to flycut the piston.

Twisted Wedge heads can also be ported out much farther then AFR-165 heads.

TFS high port

I just got brand new bare casting old style TFS high port heads I bought off of ebay. They are the discontinued version, not the new ones that TFS just came out with again. These heads can help to make some serious power, so they will be my winter project" building a sick set of heads". I'll see eventually how they work out. But TFS high ports are good, my buddy made 438 rwhp with a set, a306 bottom end and 8lbs of boost, so the high ports must be pretty good too.

Good luck with them! Its not what I would have done, but its your car. 165's are small for a 331, but they will make block splitting power regardless even with a 302 based engine with a blower... I hope you have concidered this in your decision. The 165's would have been perfect now, and would provide you with more than enough power down the road, just something to think about.

I think the twisted wedge would be a better choice if you plan on going stroker in the future just because they have the bigger intake valves and serve as a better base for future porting. (and you can use the twisted wedge without flycutting)

TW heads provide a great base for moving up later.

you can always pull them off and give them a stage 2 or 3 port. plus they have 2.02s that can be run with stock pistons

trick flows are a 170 runner intake as apposed to afr 165s. they outflow afrs on the intake as well. they are a great head and are very efficient with their unique chamber design. no valve shrouding and a swirl CC

dont wory... we will have some quick trick flow representatives here soon

Thank you guys, I hope you guys understand that I don't wanna spend money on one heads this year and do same thing next year, so I just wanna keep my money in pocket
Thanks
And please don't start war between AFR and TFS

A have a friend w/ TW heads on his 91 LX thats has 60 MM HP Turbo kit on it, he pulled 470RWHP w/ a slipping clutch. Another friend w/ a 93 GT w/ a 66 HP turbo kit w/ 165 AFR's he pulled 439 RWHP. Both cams are diffrent but I think alot of it had to do w/ the heads. The 93 GT did pull more TQ though.

Hey great choice. Trick Flows can be, like one other before me stated, ported out more then the afr's. So u can run the tw's out of the box for now and port them when the block gets the 331 improvement. I'm in love with trick flow tw's. I'm totally bias. So what shoot me.

I like TF stuff. It seems to be good quality and a decent price. I had my TF heads on 2 different mustangs and for about 8-9 years. Never gave me a problem.

Good luck on the project!

None of that suggests that the heads have anything to do with it -- maybe they do, maybe they don't. The 60mm turbo is more than likely able to do more than 470 rwhp, by the way.

I know someone with Edelbrock Performer 5.0 heads on a 91 LX that has run a best of 9.88 in the quarter. Bet that's more than 470 rwhp, and most people would agree that both AFR and TW are "better". This same person used to run very low 11's with E7TE heads . Boost is the great equalizer, it makes your choice of heads less important.

If you have not bought them yet do yourself a favor and get the track heat heads. They are the same castings as TW minus the emisions stuff (unless you need that) and come with better springs. Well worth the upgrade.
