I just discovered my 89 vert has rear speakers that must have been disconnected by the previous owner.Anyway,I went to the Crutchfield site and it indicated 5X7's were the right fit.I peeled back the rear panel enough to see that they are round, maybe 6.5's or 5.25's.They do not look anything like after market speakers so they must be stock.Any other Vert owners who changed out these speakers who can help me determine what was stock and what will fit with aftermarket speakers? Also, the location (behind a panel) is crappy for producing sound so will any speaker sound decent in there?I currently have 5.25" Alpine R components in the front and a sub in the trunk.Thanks.

5.25" round stock.

I have heard that folks are able to fit a slim (read: not deep) 6.5" there. I would also stuff it with fiberfill.

I think I have some sort of weak 5.25" Jensen somethingorothers. Stereo is on the list for a redo for this Spring for me.

I put in 6.5" Pioneer 2-way speakers in the rear and in the doors of my car. You have to take out the rear lower seat cushion, to access one screw to remove the trim panel. Drill out the rivets, and then install the new speakers. It took about 2 hours, with most of my time spent fussing with the rear seat cushion.

why did you take off the rear quarter trim panel? there's 2 screws in the speaker grill that you can take out, and slide it right out...

guy at circuit city looked up what size speakers are in the rears of a 1991 convertible and he said 6x8 or 6x9 (can be modified to fit).

and i have mbquarts with 4 prongs (2+, 2-)

I used to have a 6.5" Sony in the back. Then I went to a set of Diamonds, and had to use a 5.25" due to the depth of the diamonds. I have never thought that the oval speakers sounded as good as the rounds. But maybe its just me.
By the way this is in a 90 GT.

To mount the round speakers I used a couple of large washers as clamps, and screwed them into the 4 stock screw mounting locations.

Also, I cut a round hole in the grill so that I could mount the tweet on the stock speaker grill. I positioned it so that the rear seat belt will almost cover it up, if I so desire. I am very cautious of what can be seen when peeking in my windows.

As mentioned above, I also used some fill in the panelling.

83-90 had different panels in the back, you had to remove the entire panel to access the speakers.

91-93 were easy just like you said. two screws and they are out.

Yeah, what he said... You got a regular speaker grill just like most normal cars. The speakers in the older convertibles is mounted down low almost near the floor (forward facing) in the rear trim panels. Once you figure out the cushion, things go a lot smoother....

The best part about getting the lower cushion out was that I used to live in a condo so all my neighbors probably didn't have a clue as to what I was trying to do. They were probably glad when the crazy guy that stands up in the back of his car moved out...
