i be having this problem with my speedometer. i got the new cable and i put the correct red gear drive in the trans for 3.73 the speedometer bounces all over the place then just quits working, so i pull the red gear drive out and in the middle of the gear the small plastic red one ,out its rounded in the center. now i know the speedometer itself is good and the cable is good cause i put a drill on the end of the cable and it works but when attach to the gear in the trans it doesnt. is there a certain way to install this gear or is the problem in my trans

Was it a brand new speedo gear? Do you have a VSS in between your speedo cable and the trans?

If you have a vss the the speedo gear slides over the end and is held in place with a type of "C" clip. There is a metal rod extension fixed inside the vss that links the speedo cable and the speedo gear. The end of the rod extension is squared and has to line up with the square cutout inside the speedo gear. Same for the speedo cable to the extension.
If you don't have a VSS the the non-cruise speedo cable goes right into the trans. The speedo gear slides over the end and is held in place with the same type of "C" clip. Make sure the squared end of the cable is lined up properly with the squared cutout inside the speedo gear.

I kept snapping the speedo cable about 4 inches from the end of the cable at the trans. The bend out of the VSS between the trans mount was too sharp. After the third one snapped and the auto parts store ran out of speedo cables for cruise control I got the speedo for non cruise control. It was perfect, it fits right in the trans hole and is not near as long as the vss sensor so the bend wasn't as sharp. I don't have cruise anyways so I don't know why the VSS adapter was in there anyways. I've also been thru the red speedo gear which was still off about 4 Mph. I just put in a black 20 tooth and it about as close as it's gonna get. Hope it holds together!
