I was just finishing up my speedo cable swap, and I pulled off the old speedo gear. It was all chewed up ! Maybe I have the wrong gear ? Or is it defiitley the tranny driven gear? If it is, is there anything I can do about it ? By the way, I have the white gear, I dont remember off the top of my head how many teeth...

this is quite common. if it has the 8 gear tranny drive on it the higher number seedo gears do not mesh aswell. the only really way to solve the issue of chewed up speedo gears is to switch the intenal gear in the tranny to a 6 or 7 spline and then switch to the appropriate speedo gear.

Changing the trans speedo gear means removing the trans and then removing the tailshaft housing. That means disassembling the shifter mechanism.

See http://www.ttcautomotive.com/English/onlineorder/product.asp to download a FREE service manual for T5 or Tremec 3550
You will need the Adobe Acrobat viewer which is also a free download – http://www.adobe.com/products/acrobat/readstep2.html

See http://www.hanlonmotorsports.com/ or http://www.ddperformance.com for parts

There is another way...

The stock range of speedo gears work correctly with a limited range of tire sizes.

See http://www.corral.net/tech/gearcalc.html for more help

Check to see if there is a speedometer shop in your area. If there is, ask about the Stewart-Warner speedometer gearbox. I believe it is either a 777 Series Drive Joint Kits and Parts or 666 Series Drive Joint Kits and Parts. It is a small gear box that fits between the speedo pickup gear on the transmission and the speedometer. It has quick change gears that allow you to choose almost any tire size and rear end gear ratio you want. This will allow you to get the accuracy with within 1%-3%. The drawback is that it isn't cheap.
Please excuse the typo (their's, not mine) in the following picture - it should read Custom ratio adapters, not Custom radio adapters.

See http://www.gaugeguys.com/ratioadapt.htm for more info.

Thanks for the help everyone. I ordered another 23 tooth white gear from Jeep. That will have to do for now. My 5th gear synchro is on its way out, so after I figure out what I'm going to do with my tranny, I'll decide about the drive gear.

did your speedo work before?? My speedo cable melted to a header tube before and froze the inside cable causing the tranny gear to eat my speedo gear.
