I searched the forum and couldn't find any answer, I would do a speedcal, but there kind of expensive. I was wondering do you need the 23tooth gear for 3.73's? I thought it was the purple gear? And second should I just 3.55's because they sell the proper speedo gear for it? Decisions.....I really want 3.73's though

Cliff Notes: 3.73 - Proper speedo gear?
3.55's are they worth it? Saw proper speedo gear for it.

You can't use a speedo gear in the 4R.

Wrong.

96-98 you NEED a speedo gear or speedcal, AND a tune to fix the shift points.
99-04 you don't need a gear or speedcal, you can fix the speedo in the tune. But nothing is stopping you from installing them.

I would stay with the stock gear and use a speedcal (I have an abbott ERA). It will be more accurate and more reliable. The 21 and 23 tooth gears tend to break, the stock 19 tooth do not.

This info is correct, the only thing, the 21 tooth gear do not break like the 23 ones do. It is not that common.

281CI96Coupe:

Go with "greenbird's" advice! I've done the same thing, stock VSS gear (orange) and a SpeedCal. My speedo/odo are dialed in to near-perfection.

You need to adjust the shift points for two reasons: the N/V (rpm/speed ratio) changes and the rate of RPM change is much higher with the numerically higher rear gears.

GL!
