Speedo gear

Ok i installed a world class T-5 in my stang the other week. I have 3.73 gears in the rear. Previously i was using a red speedo gear. I believe it is the 21 tooth gear. my speedo was correct with the Plain old T-5. Now i seem to be reading about 20 KPH higher then i am travelling. This could be a good thing since this way i wont get a speeding ticket if i drive acorrding to my speedo. however i am now raking up the km's on my odometer to fast. I want to know what speedo gear you use with the world class T-5 and 3.73 gears. thx in advance

It depends on what year car the new tranny came out. It sounds like you have an 8 tooth drive gear in your new tranny so you will need the 23 tooth white gear.

I thought all world class trannies wre 87 an up mustangs?? and all used the same gear.

ok i use 3.27 gears but where can i get those gears
last time i used the green one i got it off a mark vii and my speedo meter stoped working after driving 30 miles only
pls help

They changed the drive gear to 8tooth and the torque rating in 1990. That is the reason that it needs a different gear for the newer trannys.

i think it is allfordmustang.com web site they have all sorts of world class t-5 serial numbers and the gear ration's of those tranny's aswell as the torque rating of the tranny. also it tells you what the tranny came out of. some world class t-5's are 4 banger tranny's out of svo's and the torque rating on them is quite low. however a svo 5 spd is the only t-5 with a 3.97 ratio first gear. not thats a nasty low gear

hey sorry guys but im keepin this thread alive. I have a 86 gt with an aod trans with 4.10 gears. AT around 65 its 10 mph to fast what gear should i get any pics of where its located on the tranny and where i could pick one of these bad boys at

You need the white 23 tooth gear. You can get it at your local Jeep dealer.

Alright...im getting confused by all this red, white, etc. So i have a red gear and i have 3.73's...does anyone know what that means? Is my speedo off. Im not sure what year the tranny is, but if i have a pre-1990 would it be correct or if i have a after 1990 would it be correct...catch my drift? What year would that red gear correct my speedo in? or would it at all....

In 1990 they changed the drive gear inside the tranny from 7 tooth to 8 tooth. This is the reason for all the confision with adding gears to your car.

You have a red 21 tooth gear in your car with t5 tranny and 3.73 gears:
if you tranny was made 1983-89 then you have the correct gear
if it was made 1990 or after then you have the wrong one.

This will be incorrect if you or somebody else has changed the drive gear in the tranny. Also most aftermarket trannys have a 7 tooth drive gear so it is the same as the 83-89 trannys.

Oh...Thanks squeeg, that helped me out personally, always wondered, but never really wanted to know enough to ask. Thanks...guess ill get my casting number and see what i got so ill know if my gear is correct or not.

Is it hard to switch out these "gears"? Where are they located i know on the side of the tranny but specifically? and jeep, why would i go to jeep for a ford gear?

Very easy.

Jack up the drivers side of the car. You will see a sensor in the side of the tranny, 2 connectors. Remove the bolt from the clamp that holds the sensor in. Unplug the 2 connectors, pull out the sensor, gear will be on the end. Remove the clip that holds the gear on... And put it all back in.

thx for the part number i need. i wish i had the know how to disassemble my t-5 and switch the internal gear to a 6 tooth gear. i couldn't get the t-5 rear cone off a sparew tranny i have.

Removing the tailshaft housing is actually fairly easy. You have to remove the shifter and knock out the large roll pin that holds the shift rod on. Then just remove the bolts and it comes right off

is it kinda a cold rolled pin like a flat piece of metal rolled into a circle? thats where i went wrong. now ill have to take my 3 tranny's apart and make 1 out of them. 5th gear went in 1 reverse in another and the syncro's in 2nd and third in the other one. im sure i can piece 1 together from the 3 of em.
