I have a 96 gt(auto). Im switching to 4.10 gears and bought a programer but was told i need a speed cal or the speedo gear. I dont have a ton of money right now so that why im going with the gear till i get money. Anyway what gear do i need to fit the auto? I saw people said white 23t, while i saw someone say purple and another with 21t. Does anyone have a write up on how to install one also?

paintballpyro1:

The VSS is at about 10:30 on the transmission housing as you look at the rear of the transmission towards the engine. VSS comes out with a little gentle wiggling (after the hold-down bolt is removed and the electrical connector is unplugged. The old gear pulls off, the new gear is pressed on. Watch that you don't crush the white teeth (they are very thin). Wiggle the VSS back in place - you will feel when it is seated. Take it easy tightening up the hold-down bolt, it does NOT need to be torqued down a whole bunch. No pics to help you out but it is pretty easy to do.

Word to the wise: plan on getting a SpeedCal ($100 from DallasMustang). You will be putting "ghost" miles on your car. The 23-tooth gear still gives an error of about 3 to 5% with 3.73's and it will be more with 4.10's (about 10 to 15% higher than actual). FWIW, I have been running a SpeedCal for many years and it has been flawless. My speedo/odo error is below 1% now (it was about 3.4% from the factory - not bad).

HTH,

Chris

i used the white 23t on my auto with 4.10's and the speedometer was still of about 7-8mph.. i think the white is as close as you can get as i have heard they do not make a speedo gear for 4.10's. install is very easy takes maybe 8 minutes if your taking your time.

Yea i checked with ford and for the price they want i might as well spend the extra 60-70 for the speed cal. On another note anyone know how to get a seized bolt out from the lca were it meets the frame? Ive tried beating the crap outta it, heating it up, wiggling and whatever else i could think of. I got the passenger side out with a bit of time but so far its taken me 2 hours or so and this bolt hasnt even moved.
