I am getting set to have some 4:10 gears installed. How do I go about recalibrating the speedo? I have heard all you need is a tuner like a predator.

That'll do it. Or you can get a speed-cal. Just about any tuner will allow you to recalibrate your speedo for gears/tire changes...

I dont think so, if your car is PRE 99 you will not be able to use the hand-held tuners, It would have to be done with the speed-cal or a custom chip, I had to go thru this last year wiht my 98 after my 4:10 install , all the hand tuners would not work on my car becaused of it being a 98 , only the 99 and newer cars can be programed for seed-o's. So mine was done with my diablo chip. Go to the tuners web sites and check on what their handhelds can do and then you can see for yourself.

I'm guessing by your user name that you have an '02. If it's a 5 speed, you can either use a handheld tuner, or the Brothers Performance speed-cal. (I didn't mention the Dallas Mustang speed-cal, but they are the exact same thing, only Brothers is 10 bucks cheaper.)

The speed-cal's are for 5 speed only, so if you have an automatic, you need a tuner or a chip.

A lot of wrong info is being passed in this thread!

First you can use a speedcal in autos as well as manuals. The next point, you can use a speedcal in all applications of the 4R70W. I am using a Speedcal in a 96 4R70W auto car. In pre 99 cars, handheld tuners as well as chips can not calibrate the speedo. It has to be done with either a speedcal or a speedo gear. A chip or tuner for the older auto cars, only changes the shift points for the selected gears used.

If that's true, then the companies that are making the speedcal shouldn't specifically say (in big bold letters on their site) for "5 speed only."

Yup as with yours.

The DMP Speedcal will not work on all 4R70W's. It can only be used on 94-98 autos only and all 94-04 5 speeds

Well I am wrong, you can not use a speed-cal on 99+ 4R70W in a 99+car equipped with a 4R70W. However, if you swap a 99+ 4R70W into an older car, you have to use the speedcal as well as your VSS/OSS sensors. I had forgotten that the VSS/OSS sensor was combined in 99+ autos so that is why Speedcal won't work in a newer car. I based my original comment knowing of cars running 99+ 4R70Ws with speedcals but those are in 98- cars.

You are still wrong for stating that they ONLY work for manual transmission cars in which they clearly work in Auto cars as well, just not 99+.
