1989 GT, 5.0 5-speed.

Speedo hasn't worked since i bought it (Friday).

bought the replacement cable, tore into it and noted that the cable i removed appeared to function as expected, the dash unit functioned as expected and the gear in the transmission attached to the VSS was in good shape, no signs of any damage, etc.

With new cable in, still no workie.

I believe these things can not work even with the above listed, but i wanted to see if anyone else had this issue. Tomorrow i'll put it in the air again and try the twist test to make sure the speedo functions down to the cable end, if not the actual gear.

thanks in advance, back to drinking my sorrows away.

I think it's my pigtail.

New speedo cable, new VSS. Verified with a drill that teh end of teh cable turns the speedo. VSS must not be getting power from the pigtail....

The VSS sensor does not draw power from anything. It is a small A/C generator that generates a sine wave that varies in frequency according to vehicle speed. The VSS sensor output goes the the cruse control amplifier and engine control computer. If the VSS dies or the wiring is bad, the cruse control and computer's idle dashpot functions don't work. The only way it would affect the speedo operation is if the shaft for the speedo gear or the coupling for the speedo cable inside the VSS failed.

sounds like either your not getting the cable plugged into the tranny enough or, the speedo driven gear is missing/bad inside the tranny. its kinda hard to look into that hole, but you should see another gear for the speedo cable gear to mesh with.

Agreed, went thru the same deal on my friends car, looked into the tranny and cannot see the driven gear at all.

That sucks you will have to pull the trans and the tail will have to come off for this. Just make sure you dont hammer the roll pin going through the shifter block down to far. Just make sure its just past the shift rod to remove the block from the rod thats it. If you hammer down to far it will lock it in place and you will be screwed.
