The speedometer cable in my 85 GT is going out and I cannot find a replacement for that year. They all start at 87. I was thinking I may have to install a gauge from an 87 and then use an 87 cable to make this work. Does any one know if the 87 and later speedometer will fit in the 85 dash and will the 87 cable fit the 85 T5 trans? Any suggestions or ideas would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.

The later gauges will definitely not fit.

But, from junkyard diving, I can tell you with 99% certainty that the cables are the same. The only thing to look out for is if your car has a VSS or not (I'm assuming not, but don't know the 85's well enough). Make sure you get a cable that matches that.

FWIW, I just changed the cable on my 87 (haven't run it yet), and the cable I put in I grabbed from the junkyard in an 81 I think. It was the same dimensions, had the correct mounting bracket, took the same gear, plugged into the speedo, and fit right in. I don't think it will be a problem.

HHHMMM, 50resto sent me a cable they said was for 79-93. Some generic brand, one size fits all. The cable itself is to long and when it was attached it was binding in the outer core but it hooks up and seems to fit. The speedo was jumping all over the place. Autozone.com has a cable 14.99. Brand name is called Pioneer. Another generic cable.

Maybe it's better to hit the junkyard then. You will know how it's going to fit at least, the only question will be how well it works. But, it's also a good time to lube it which will help.
