I have a ticking/chattering noise that is clearly associated with road speed right behind my speedometer. I think it’s either the head of the cable or the speedo itself. The needle of the speedo is rock steady though, no jumping around. I think this is a common problem. I have had it for quite a long time and would love to fix it. Any easy solutions? I had to replace the cable once and the problem went away but has always come back. I think that the lube inside is not up to the very hot climate here in Houston. I did a search for this and found a few notes that alluded to this problem but not specifically addressing this issue.

Thanks

I have the same noise, I think it's the speedo cable. I always asumed it could just be lubed, I just haven't been motivated enough to pull the dash out to fix it.

Anyone ever lubed their speedometer cable?

When my car was 4 yrs old, it developed that annoying noise too. I pulled the inner cable out, lubed it with some good multipurpose marine grease and it kept the noise away. This year, 13 yrs old, I finally replaced the whole cable because it was kinda jumping on the speedometer.
