Dude get gears...there will be no way for your parents to tell, your dad or mom will just think its the way the car is....no one will ever know. When I first got my Cobra it was bone stock, I disguised a couple of mods but they know about all of them know...good luck.

How much would it run me for all the stuff needed for gears? I can't do it myself so I'd have to get a shop to do it... so I'd need to pay for hardware, install, and a speedcal, right? What else? How much should all that run me?

I'm taking mine in next saturday for 4.10's. It is going to run me $399 for everything except a speedcal and they said no longer than 4hrs install.

Get exhaust. I know you must hate having the stock system on there, especially when stock WS6/SS sound louder and better than stock Stangs

Get some welded in mufflers and show people around whos boss

nah get a cat-back! welded in mufflers = teh loze.

just tell the parents that only the headers and mid-pipe see gains. the cat-back won't do anything.

To answer one of your questions, yes, a T Handle will fit on the Tri-Ax, Pro5.0 stick. Summit has the specific part for it.

Why not go really old school, and add the Hurst stick while you're at it? Then, ditch the leather boot for the correct rubber one! Won't go faster, but very different look to it.

Get the springs. Period. Makes an incredible difference in the appearance and handling of the car. Just shop carefully, so you're not bouncing down the road.

On the topic of shifters: I've heard aftermarket shifter installation is a nightmare.. can anyone support/deny that? And I thought about getting the Hurst shifter because I think they look bad ass, but if I'm going to be paying 100 some dollars for a shifter I want the noticable improvement that a Tri-ax or 5.0 would give.

And as far a springs... how much do those run? What are good companies/sites to look at? What else should I know about before looking into it?

Shifters are easy to install. Springs vary in price depending on what kind of drop you want. I'm getting Ford Racing C springs ($110) that ought to lower the car about 1.2" all around. I plan on installing them myself too.

Shifters are truly one thing just about anybody with a basic set of hand tools can do. There's an article right here on the site:

that can show you all the basics. Whatever shifter you bought will come with instructions; just compare them to what you see in the article. You mentioned about $100 for a shifter. Unless you buy used, expect to be in the $160 range. For the stick itself, you can mix and match between most every shifter and stick to get the style you want.

Springs. Just about everyone has their favorites. Scan through the posts here on the site. Myself, I went with Eibach Pro Kit and couldn't be happier. Solid 1.5" drop, no harsh ride. I found them in the classifieds of another 'Stang site for $150 shipped, new.

If were talking about the same thing, I really never got use to the feeling of 1st 3rd and 5th. Expecially 3rd and 5th, having to pull it up into gear instead of just craming it in.

I'm gonna sound old here, but I think you should work on suspention and styling then add performance once your parents see that you can handle the *ehem* "massive power" of the 96 vert. I plan on buying my son a stang or any V8 if that's what he wants, but the first time he goes behind my back, it's gone. But that's just me. For 5-6 hundred, I would definately say springs, shocks and struts. Subframes if you can afford it now. The light bar is sweet too, but it's a little costly like mentioned above. Just my .02 though.

K&N (its just an air filter tell them you never have to replace it to save money in the long run )

Subframes

and a window tint if you like it (i like mine )

Yes. The only "customizing" to the install is needing to root around Home Depot for exactly the right bushings for the Hurst stick, and that's about it...
