Dont mean to go too far off track, but if u guys were building a stroked 351(408) in a 79 351 block, would you spend the extra $300 on a forged crank? Would a forged crank be that much better durability wise?

As stated, a huge part is in the tune.

I have probably done more research on blocks than most. I have a frpp sportsman block sitting in my closet right now. It will remain std bore but i may stoke it to a 327 (not sure about the stoke yet but it will NOT be bored because i want all the cylinder wall thickness i can get). A guy on Long Island not too far from me made 790 rwhp and went 8.91 in the quarter on a turbo 327 B50 block. Seeing how i am in a small financial situation, and how this block can handle the power (ill be 500 rwhp or so), I made the decision to use this block .

so basically where i am at now is, to be comfortable that my engne won't frag while hauling ass resulting in major destruction i should step up to a dart block.

now a good bottom end dart is going to run roughly $5k, so will a comparable built mod motor. so the next question is, does anyone know of where i can find a 96-98 cobra donor car? or should i go for an 99-01 and try out the irs?

Ben, I think you'll find great help by asking Paul Bird over on Turbomustangs about what you should do. Hes the one that builds the american iron race cars and he is in the middle of his own project. A 2300lb all carbon fiber 97 cobra. The thing is rediculous. He knows a lot about building that kind of car that you want and he can help you a lot. He recently had a kid so he is not on all the time, but will be of great help to you.

well, i just got off the phone with eric at chp and thats where my motor will come from.....

dart block 331 stroker, 9:1, 4340 forged crank 4340 lightweight i-beam rods, probe srs pistons, eddy rpm port matched to the heads, afr 205's, comp custom grind cam .544/.566 114lsa, romac, fidanza flywheel, canton pan, etc.

should finalize the order on monday. this thread and the other on hardcore50 were both a big help in making my decision.

thanks for the heads up. i am prolly gonna give ol sean hyland a call tommorow. i have kicked around the idea of a dohc motor for a while now and i think i'll just say **** it and do it.

my thinking is that if i can rev a mod motor a little higher(safely), i can run more gear and not have to worry about making a broader powerband.

2300lb 97 sounds wicked, can't say what i'm gonna do but it may include selling everything and picking up an 01 cobra.

hey green, that motor sounds nice, i wish you the best of luck. if you don't mind me asking how much green did that set you back?

I just wanted to add that I've heard that they were not worth the 900.00 or so it would cost you. It's still a 2-bolt block, and the issues that break a stock block are the same issues that break these (the b50).
Someone posted it, but I think it got overlooked, Ford is coming this summer with a new block. 4-bolt on 2-3-4 mains, siamese bore, 1/2 bolt holes, can be bored to 4.125 (can you say 375 cubes?), and SUPPOSEDLY around 1000.00.
Rumor that it can support near 1000hp.
This is the one I'm gonna get....
M-6250-BOSS302 (I think the 6250 part is right, I'm doing it from memory.) Just go to Ford Racing and download the catalog. It's in the engine section....

Dennis, given ford's past history I wouldn't want to be the guinea pig for running this block. Again, ford is posing this as an "inbetween" block that falls between the stock and the "race" blocks on the market. This WAS the intention of the ford sportsman block as well and when it first came out it had a published rating of over 600hp that it could withstand. Look at what's published now. They had to lower the published numbers because they found that they broke at their previous rating. Maybe ford learned their lesson that the public that is in the market for such a piece are not the "believe all the adds" type of people and will produce something that will stand up to what they claim. I personally will sit back and watch what happens, but I predict it will be a long ways away from production given ford's past practices. Maybe I'm wrong on all of this, that wouldn't be a bad thing.

No no, I won't be the guinea pig. I'll let someone else "test" it first. Also, the price HAS to be right. If it's within 3-400 of a DART block (or one of the WORLD blocks), I'll have to pass on it. But if it turns out to be what they say it will be, It'll be sufficient for me. (Hell the 74 351 block I have in the garage is probably enough, but I just have to buy to many external parts to go for it right now....)
Now, If the put that new block together with one of thier forged rotating assemblies, THAT'D be an interesting package....
