I have been having this squealing/chirping noise when cold here lately. It gets louder/ faster when I rev the motor, so at first I thougt it was a pulley. The idle pulley is not functional so I know it is now that. I replaced the power steering pump, but it is still there. I've heard that the distributor ould make this noise, but it is a brand new MSD one. The stocker's stator was bad so I replaced it with an MSD one. The stator was bad in it and the noise was there so I sent it back for a brand new one. Waiting for the new MSD I put the stocker back in and the noise was there with the stocker as well. What is this noise!?!?! I need to fix it before this weekend.

Accessory squeaks can be hard to track down. Have you tried replacing the belt? You can also try using a stethoscope (or a long screwdriver or a piece of rubber hose held up to your ear) and CAREFULLY poke around to see if you can pinpoint the source. Any of the accessory pulleys can make that kind of sound. Have you tried taking the belt off and spinning all the accessories individually by hand to see if they spin quietly and smoothly?
Lastly, you can try to briefly run the engine without the belt, just to rule-out if its internal engine noise.
Good luck

I'm with 1TMF. Get a cheapo stethoscope from HF (it works better for me than a screwdriver and is easier to reach things like the AIR pump). In my case it was the smog pump. With the scope you'll know when you find the right part cuz it'll about blow-out your eardrums. Dont worry about the smell after you listen to the problem component- you just need to change your shorts.

Did you check pulley alignment? If one is cockeyed, it can make noise until the belt warms up.

Good luck.

Well a good stehoscope to use is a piece of copper tubing or somthing hollow and stick your ear right in it, wayyy better then a screw driver, saved me a few times.

I'd hate for someone to probe around accessories turning at 1K RPM with a piece of anything jambed in their ear (with the head turned, stereoscopic viewing is difficult, and it's easy to hit a pulley and ram the pipe through one's head).

Matt's method works well but I'd just hate for someone to get hurt unnecessarily. I think I paid like 5-8 bucks for the scope (and I use it fairly often).

I had that squeak too. It used to just be when it was cold. Then before i took it apart for the 347 it would squeak when cold and at WOT. I might put on a new belt tensioner with the new motor.
