srew in studs

2 of my press in studs in my 289 have worked teir way up 1/4 inch so I know whats next tap for screw in studs my questions are ,canIdo this while still on block ,do I have to mill bosses if so how much , should I use guide plates?
sorry so many questions at once ,but its been a bad mustang day.Thanks in advance

No, no and no? There is too much metal being removed to tap out the holes with the engine assembled. Use the studs w/o the hex head in the middle and milling won't be neccessary. Early heads have what amounts to guide plates built in. Using guide plates would bind up the push rods. Later heads used rail rockers to center the rocker arms, which would also bind things up.

Get a set of factory screw in studded heads? Best way

The only factory screw in stud heads were the 289 Hi-po's, and for what you'll pay for these, you can buy new aftermarket heads. Heads need to be pulled to install studs. And like brianj5600 stated, non rail heads need no guide plates, the later rail rocker heads-- you need to switch to non rail rockers with guide plates.
