Stalling issues ...

Hi guys,


First of all ... I DID A SEARCH! I couldn't find anything quite like this, so here goes.

When I start my 02' GT, I turn the key to the start position (build up fuel pressure) and then I crank the engine. The engine starts abruptly, makes a few clanging metal sounds and sputters and dies. I've tried starting the engine two more times, and I get the exact same thing. I notice the SES light is on after the intial attempt, so obviously whatever is going on is throwing a code.

Now, if the IAC was shot, would there be this clanging metal sound upon start-up (all three times?) Also, would the IAC cause a code to be thrown? Would I somehow be able to pull this code with out using and OBD reader?

Also important: It is a rainy damp day, but only had been damp/raining for about an hour before I started the car. Never had starting issues before, except for the "hot start" problem all GT's have. Car has 34,000 miles on it, meticulously maintained.

Hot start is what alot of Mustang guys have. No one is really sure what causes it, and Ford doesn't acknowledge the problem.

It's when you shut off your engine after driving it. Then, you go and start the engine alittle while later while it is still hot, and it starts up and sputters and dies. Then you have to try to start it again and it is fine. If it starts to sputter out you can give it some gas and it will be fine. It's weird.

You guys don't have that problem? Consider yourselves lucky!

I had the problem. I replaced my IAC and problem solved.

I just went out to try and start the car, and the engine turns over SLOWLY but won't start. I don't have a voltmeter to check the battery, but the indicator light on the battery does show green, and the "voltmeter" on the dashboard shows the normal range (dummy gauge though).

Do you guys think it could be the battery? It has never shown signs of aging up until it died. It is 5.5 years old though.

These don't seem like symptoms of a bad IAC.

You could check the battery. My car is 6 years old and I still have the original battery. Some times my car would crank over but would not stay running unless I kept my foot on the gas. Other times it would idle at 250 rpm.

Figured it out!

Car was flooded. Held the gas to the floor when starting it (stops fuel injectors from dumping fuel into the engine), and it started right up. Still doesn't explain those metal on metal sounds but so far so good. Everything looks fine.

Your car still has a problem. You should not have to hold your foot on the gas pedal to start the car. If anything, you are telling the engine to dump fuel into the car before you actually start it. I think you have an injector or fuel pump problem. You should check the fuel pressure at the fuel rails. My car sounds EXACTLY like that video when I pull the fuel pump fuse out to do a compression check.

I only had to hold the pedal to the floor before turning the ignition the first time I started the car. This is the normal procedure for clearing a flooded engine, atleast in a Mustang anyways (this is what I'm told by a Ford service tech). It disables fuel to flow from the fuel injectors and burns the fuel that is already in the engine. I can start the car normally every time since, and it runs perfectly.

Seems okay to me, no?

IAC. Replace it. Get a Ford part , not aftermarket.
