I received my cobra intake yesterday and before putting it on I want to paint it. My car is red with a black top so I was thinking of painting it black with red lettering :spot: I think it'll look frucking cool. I spoke to a buddy of mine and he said that the best way to paint an intake is by powdercoating it. I don't know if he's right, but I know that not all of you have used powder, so what do you all recommend. What grit sandpaper should I use. Help me out and help my car look cool

I painted my cobra intake gray. Can of Dupli color Engine Enamel 500*, can pick up a can at your friendly local walmart. Mine came out good, I painted it over a yr ago and it still looks really nice. Not bad for a spray can paint job.

ok, but your intake was already gray so there's wansn't much of a color change. Do you think i can do the same with a completely different color (black) and get away with using that paint? I don't know what would look better, flat or enamel paint, what do you think?

I cleaned it real well and primed it. I then added 3 coats of my paint and light clear coat. I did not sand it at all. I painted the lower and the bottom of the upper.

I just used some Rustoleum Hammerite spray paint. I primed it first with automotive primer, then two or three coats of it. It hides ANY imperfections, even though I ground it smooth and sanded the casting marks. I used the gray silver color and then accented it with a polished plate and filled in the background of the plate with the same red as my car. I just personally never liked the black manifolds.

BOOOOOOOOOOO :D Ok but mine is gonna look sweet.

Ok so I go to Wal-Mart and buy a couple of cans of Rustoleum Hammerite spray paint and a can of primer (any in particular?). Then, i just clean it very well and prime it with one coat. wait 10 minutes and apply one coating of black (enamel?) paint and let it dry for, say, 30 min. and repeat process until happy with results.

How did i do?

PS, what do you all use to keep your engine clean? I used the degreaser from Auto Zone but IT SUCKS ROYAL ASS!!!

I'm a freak and use automotive paints for mine, I like PPG concept as it looks like powdercoat but much smoother/glossier....

Do yourself a favor if you spray bomb it...let it atlleast dry o/nite...to many times i did that and rushed the reassy only to finger it all up...it may seem dry in a couple hours, but it can still be messed up...

Heres my stocker in Black...Black tends to "hide" the intake, specially if you have a STB on....Black/Red go well together...

This is my latest one...did it in Silver and no STB to cover it up...Almost went the same color scheme as you mentioned...I have seen that 95 Cobra done up like that and it does look sweet....mine has the plaque, the 95 doesn't, and looks good with Red lettering....

You gotta post pics of that! I think a blacked out engine bay would be really trick and I've never seen one before. In fact, to totally hijack this thread  , does anyone have pics of a blacked out engine? I'd love to see it.
