starter problem

it occurs randomly, but ever since i switched my transmission, my starter tends to get pms. i'll go to start the car and when i turn the key, the starter will just whine, then i'll turn the key back and try it again and the car will start. it doesn't happen everytime, just occasionally. think it's time for a new starter? appreciate anyone's input thanks

this has been goin around lately.
i would check your cables really well. they can corrode from the inside out. cleaning the connections or replacing the cables should do it.
now if it happens only when the car is hot, could be heat sink. does not sound like it in your case. last choice is a bendix problem, also not likely. check connections. dont forget the starter cable if the others dont fix it.

I was having that problem, try banging starter with hammer or rolling and popping clutch. I got sick of that so.....I got a nice hi torque starter for not too bad of a price from www.pa-performance.com (the place that is famous with mustangs and 3g upgrades) came with upgraded power wire...car cranks like a BEAST!

well i remember when i did hte tranny swap and took the starter out. it looked kind of crappy in there to say the least. think i should take it out and clean it? or is it supposed to look black with junk caked on to it? lol

i would not really worry about how dirty the starter is (clean is always better and more efficient. dirt holds heat and moisture). but, i would not bother unless you are having hot start issues (heat sink), or you are bored.

check cables and motor to chassis cable.

we had that problem with my dad's 81 F350, it just whined like crazy. and since i was just starting with the mechanic stuff, i decided to replace it. when i took it off, there were metal shavings in the starter... whoever had the truck before or whatever only mounted on of the mounts for the starter, it shifted and the flywheel was grinding on the actual body :/

i know this is an old thread, but i was doing a search since my starter is almost shot.

The bendix may be bad or you have have a chiped tooth on the flywheel?
The only way to check the flywheel is pull off the starter and have someone turn your motor and check it out.

Bendix going bad or the solenoid on top of the starter that moves the Bendix is going out. either way, it means replacing the starter.

mine did this same thing, when i took it off, there was a rot hole in the friggen thing lol it must have been from the hole lol
