Starter problems HELP!

I have a 1992 GT Convertible and every time i go to start the car, the starter continues to run for 2-3 seconds after the car is running. i have put a new starter, solenoid, and ignition switch but it still grinds. any help is appreciated.
 
I forgot to mention that i did shim it, and it didnt help. it does it everytime i start it, hot or cold. i also forgot to mention that it is an automatic. i dont think it is the wrong flywheel or anything since it is all original. its been baffling me since i bought the car 2 years ago.
 
Is the block plate (thin steel plate that goes between engine block and transmission or bell housing) still in place? If not, that would cause the problem.
 
Do you have a fender-solenoid lug with only a relatively small wire on it?
If you have 4 or 6 AWG cables on both fender-solenoid lugs, someone might have read something online, gotten confused, and wired up the circuit incorrectly.
 
The early aero foxes had a non-piggyback-solenoid on the starter. The later aero's (like yours) have a piggyback solenoid on the starter from the factory. If someone incorrectly wired your fender solenoid for an early (non-piggyback) starter, you could have inductance issues depending upon what was done. This would allow the starter to run-on.

If your starter cable is on the same lug as your battery cable (and about 100 other wires), you should be ok. If your starter cable is *not* on the same lug as the battery cable, then more info is needed.

If they put on a new type of starter, and hooked it up incorrectly, then it would do exactly what you said.

See what type of starter you have. You can tell by if there are one or more wires going to the starter, and if there's a relay on the top of the starter.

! ! ! WARNING: DO NOT INSTALL A JUMPER WIRE BETWEEN THE BATTERY TERMINAL AND THE SOLENOID BLADE TERMINAL AT THE STARTER TO AVOID THE USE OF THE # 12 WIRE. IF DONE, VOLTAGE IS GENERATED TO THE SOLENOID BY THE STARTER SPINNING AFTER THE RELEASE OF THE START KEY OR BUTTON, CAUSING THE STARTER TO REMAIN ENGAGED, RESULTING IN SEVERE DAMAGE AND EVENTUAL FAILURE OF THE STARTER ! ! !

Mine looks like the starter on the left one of the new style starters and its hooked up right, ive done it twice.

So, you have it such that:

1) The big/fat wire on the starter's relay is always live with +12V.
2) On the relay/solenoid on the fender, you have a big terminal (the one that's switched) with only the small wire that goes to the relay on the starter.

Just about any other way, and you'll have the starter "act like a generator" and produce electricity while it's turning which will activate the starter's relay until the current draw kills the relay. Note that many electric vehicles, and some newer gas engines, use a combo integrated starter/alternator. There's no magic, no hand waving, just standard electro-magnetic theory.

My fender relay/solenoid is relocated and "underneath/besides" my ABS module that I have mounted on the Driver's side fender. So, I don't have an easy way for me to get a picture of my fender relay/solenoid.

If you have it hooked up correctly, then you likely need a spacer. Or, maybe the stater of flexplate have dings/nicks.

i have to check all of this out. i've gotten a lot of good information. the mechanic couldn't tell me anything close to any of this!
