Starter and Center Link

I just put a 302 in my 1966 Stang. Took out the I6. I have not done anything to the suspension yet. I bought a new starter, but it won't fit. When I go to put it in on the bellhousing (157tooth), it hits the center link. What needs to be done to get it on so I can start the car and tune the engine.

What year 302? 1992-up use a smaller gear reduction starter with a built in solinoid - if this starter is used please use a matching fender mount solinoid for a 92 up and connect the smaller wire from the starter to the switched side of the solinoid and the larger wire to the battery side of the solinoid or the starter will hang up.
