Starter Solenoid

Had a "shorted" solenoid that would keep the starter engaged even witht the engine running. Replaced with a brand new one with Autozone, lasted for about a day and did the same thing, Took it back to get another one and it did it again. WTF? Is this part just defective or something? Is there a replacement to ask for?

The only way those opperate is to get power from the wire that comes from the ignition switch.Make sure you have it on the correct pole(there should only be one).If anything,replace your ignition switch.Not the lock cylinder,the actuall switch.Your ignition switch is letting that wire get power even after it starts and the key goes to the run position,the switch is probly stickin.

sorry I didn't say. I replaced that as well just to be sure it was the solenoid. I pulled the wire off the solenoid during the prob and it kept doing it.

The new ones are coming with 2 poles also

If your starter is running unusually high resistance and generating a lot of heat that could explain it too. Maybe check the connections to the starter motor.

What constitutes cheap? I bought the one from Autozone for a 5.0. Are there more options?

The brand is more important than the store.

Motorcraft is tough to beat. As an example in the aftermarket, Standard Brand is very good as well (in my experience).

Your starter is bad.

My starter would stay on with the engine running so I replaced the solenoid and it did the same thing. I also replaced the ignition switch and it still happened.

Finally I replaced the starter and havent had an issue since.

I took the starter to Advance Auto and they said it was good but when I took it to a rebuilder they said it was bad.

I paid $60 with a lifetime warranty for a rebuilt starter.

Low battery Voltage/CCA and or poor cables and grounds can cause this problem. The solenoid is arcing and welding itself inside the housing.
