Quick Question What would Cause a starter to start and keep trying to start? even when your no turning the key. This happens everyonce in a while.

I agree. I was going to say something different but then I realized this is an 88 so it has the conventional setup with a fender mounted solenoid. Beat the crap out of the solenoid with a hammer, I bet it won't act up again for a long time, and if it does, replace it. Fords have been doing the same crap since 1964 at least

Tap it with the handle of a screw driver DONT BEAT IT. If it keeps acting up replace it. Try running an extra ground wire to one or more of the bolts that hold on the Starter solenoid. The relays usualloy go bad due to a bad ground or not a strong enough ground

Ya I can try that I just got a new solenoid and it just started doing the same thing. you guys are probally right I just need to ground it better. Im just worried if it starts doing that and Im in a parking lot loll I will be S.O.L

i've never had a problem like that from a solenoid. but it could be the bendix drive in the starter. they get stuck engaged an thats what happens. just my 2 cents

I been though 3 starters soo idk ..its possible tho. another thing that happens when I first start it it fires right up .but if I shut it off and go to restart it nothing just lights could these problems be related

are you usin cheap starters? that could be the stuck engaged problem an when you shut it off an try to start it again can be bad ground on solenoid or just a bad solenoid
