I have had my 289 in and out this past winter. I am also a fairly good home mechanic working on cars for over 40 years. Currently after this last engine install I must have something backwards or attached incorrectly. My car will start in any gear. What is my error? Ignition switch never touched. Please help.

That may be possible, it was fine before but the Drop down link cable (from Accelerator Pedal) came off when I was working on it I think that may also attached to the neutral safety switch....Yes?

On an automatic the NSS wraps around the shaft on the transmission where the gears are selected. On a stick car, the clutch pedal has to be in to complete the start circuit. Lots of mods over the years maybe? You need to find your NSS, chase wires, and see what's up.
