Starting issues Help!!

ok so heres the deal...I have an 87 mustang 5.0

whenever my battery died in the past....I have always been able to start it after a bit of charging, however if the battery was not putting out enough juice...instead of the car starting you would hear a grinding sound coming from the starter...I never really thought much of it except that the battery wasn't putting out enough....so sometimes I would pop start the car instead...

now the past 3 months the car's battery has been dying and been very low...and I usually had to use a jump pack to get it going or jump start it....well the last time that I went to start it..it was COMPLETELY dead....no juice at all....so I used the jump pack and no matter how long I kept charging the battery, the starter would keep grinding and grinding...

So my next attempt was to run another car side by side with it and using jumper cables. I ran it for about 10 minutes... and tried again.. still nothing

I gave up and called my mechanic..he suggested that either the fly wheel or the starter is bad, so he told me to put the car in 3rd gear and move the car forward a foot and try again...so I did and no difference

I can't pop start because I'm too close to a cliff

he also said that he is going to need remove the transmission or motor to get to the starter...anyone have advice?

He'd have to remove the trans and bell to get to the flywheel, not the starter.

He had you put it in gear and move it to see if you were at a bad spot on the ring gear (on the flywheel). This is a test I do myself.

It sounds like there's a decent chance the starter took a dump. You can have it tested at the parts store if you remove it. Before yanking it, check battery connections and the motor ground. A lack of power and grounding pathways can cause issue.

Swapping a starter isnt really tough except for needing 120 extensions to get to a bolt or two.

If you need a new one, consider upgrading to a unit with a piggyback solenoid (like a starter for a 94-95 GT).
