Starting my 69 mach 1 without a key...

Alright so its not MY car persay, but heres the story...

A friend of my had an uncle that was a car collector and somewhat recently past away. Most of his cars were left to his family with a 1969 Mustang mach 1 with the 428 cobra engine, left to his brother (my friends dad). The problem is the car has been sitting for awhile and the key is nowhere to be found.

We did find a old key that said ford on it, that fits in the door and ignition perfectly, but it won't turn so we suspect the car doesn't have the original ignition cylinder and door locks because we're pretty sure that this was the key for the mustang at some point (the car was completly restored at some ponit and lots of parts were replaced).

Now, my friend and I really would like to get the car started so we can, you know maybe take her around the block a few times or something and my friends dad is cool with it if we can figure out how to get it started and we're careful with it.

We are considering ordering a new ignition cylinder, but that seems like a bit of a pain, and would probably be awhile until we could get a hold of one and get it put in, so we were wondering if there is anything we could do in the mean time just to see if it starts and maybe take it on a little "test" drive until we can find a permanate soloution. We were thinking it might be easy to hot wire, considering it is a pretty old car after all, and the wires coming out of the back of the ignition cylinder are somewhat accessable, but there are like 5 of them (red w/green stipe, yellow, brown, green w/blue stripe, lt. brown......not really sure on the colors as I'm just going off memory) But we really have no idea which wires are which or which ones to cut/cross to make it work. We also played with the idea of picking the lock on the cylinder, but the best we could come up with was a little screwdriver for a tension wrench and a paper clip for a lock-pick, neither me or my friend are very experianced locksmithes, so we didn't have much luck there.

So that is where we are at now, the car is in a shop about 15-20 minutes away from us, but we are thinking about going back tomorrow to play with it a bit some more and try to work something out, and any insite or ideas on how we can make this thing start would be of great help to us.

On a side note, I'd just like to say this car is amazing. Its all black, completly restored and looks brand new inside and out. It has a 428 cobra-jet engine with a 4-speed manual and the engine bay is just so clean I wanted to start licking it. Me and my friend are usually more import guys (I drive a rx-7, he has a dsm and a R1) but this car is just pure sex. This car is like a history lesson(after all, the car is twice my age!) but I deffinatly don't want to sleep through it. So please help us out!!! Any help you give us will be educating a couple ricers about some classic american muscle

if you wanted american muscle, you got it boys! good luck with starting it...

on a side note... not even I would lick my engine and it doesnt get dirty that much either.

If it's a 69, easy to start with a wire and screwdriver. PM me. (I've owned a few 69's!)

You should be able to start it at the solenoid mounted to the firewall with a screwdriver as chepsk8 said.

Just be careful. Just because it has a brake pedal, doesnt mean it has brakes

If the key fits, it should be the right one. You say it's been sitting a while, so I'd check the battery first. Is the starter kicking in ? Does it have fuel in it? Take off a plug wire and hold it up against the chassis and have some one crank it to see if you got spark. Look for hidden battery kill switches. Good Luck.

Call a locksmith if its your car

How do we know its your car? Might be a nigerian scam to take someones ride.

I agree, this is easy to do, but not proper for posting in a public forum. If the key is truely lost, then I'd think the owner would want to find a more permanent solution.

I would spend some time and find the key (if the one you have really doesn't work). If the dude owned the car, and invested that much time to restore, he had a key somewhere. Nobody would go to that much trouble and never turn the car over.

Hot wire it just like in the movies. It's amazing that someone can get a car started by twiddling with the wires under the dash for a few seconds, then drive away, even when the car has a locking column........

The easies, fastest, cleanest way to solve this problem is a locksmith. Have one come out and "adjust" your key or make a new one. Perhaps $50.00

I must say, if you won't put up the small amount of money for a locksmith for a ride you seem to be dying for, then how will you scrounge up the money to fill the gas tank?

I mean seriously, what kind of heir to a collector car worth about an average annual salary would allow a couple kids without any muscle car driving experience pick at, cut wires, etc., so they can go joyriding? Probably said, "Oh don't worry about insurance either."

Who here doesn't know somebody who took their old man's car out in a clandestine fashion and got busted?

IMHO, that is too nice of a car to be cutting and splicing wires when all you have to do is order a new ignitioin switch and have it there in a couple days. Or like the other guys said call a lock smith. :Word:

Oh for the love of god! Just use the old screwdriver the solinoid trick! You can hotwire a vintage mustang in less than a minute, and never cut/hack/chop any wires. Hells bells, that's how we got my 289 car started, thanks to the idioten PO who hid the keys under the dash. The only downside is that you'll have to pull the wires off the solinoid to shut the car off because this method takes the switch out of the equation anyway. I mean, the 2 terminals you have to jump across are staring straight at you when you open the hood, what more could you ask for? OTOH, if it's on a hill, pop it in 1st and push start it!
